Adorning walls with murals
Gayatri Rajwade

THE translucent effect is understated and the muted backdrop with shimmering metallic overtones, delights. Striking flower patterns adorn the fibre-cast mural, distinct in its richness, that adorns a niche at Hotel Mountview in Chandigarh.

For its creator, Charanjeet Kaur “enlivening ambiences and uplifting the serenity of a place” through motifs and designs is where her innovative strokes lie.

The mural, unveiled recently, is a labour of love for Charanjeet who has worked for 45 days to produce this piece of art. The work was first modelled in clay and once dried, it was processed with chemicals and then painted over with chemical bound automotive paints.

Charanjeet graduated in fine arts from Amritsar in 1992, following it up with a postgraduation in English and a diploma in fashion designing and interiors. Her initial foray was into the world of inventive exhibitions highlighting her many talents; like pottery, block-printing, accessories for interior decoration, stained glass and wall hangings.

“I have a great zeal for learning. I love experimenting with different mediums and techniques, something which gives my work an original touch. I have no free time as my mind is always ticking with new ideas,” she says.

Since 2003, she has only dabbled with murals and paintings and her repertoire encompasses some interesting work with tiles, terracotta, wrought iron, marble, plaster and even jute. “Murals and painting can change the whole mood of a place,” she avers.

Her work is not new to the city. A mural for CITCO’s Sukhna Lake cafeteria, several for some eating joints, homes, farmhouses and offices, she has done some appealing compositions.

It is Satish Gujral’s astounding body of work that she hopes to emulate. “I love his individualistic style and how he constantly reinvents himself.” It is M.F. Husain who is her idol for his “unswerving patience and hard work.” — TNS

Shamsher Kaul
Shamsher Kaul

Chandigarh, July 28
Shamsher Kaul is awaiting his date with stars. After grabbing a plum role in Amrit Sagar’s period film “1971”, there is little else he can do. A product of the Department of Mass Communication, Panjab University, Kaul has been working for long to make his presence felt in Bollywood.

Ask him what led him to a detour and he says, “I had several easier options but I found acting most challenging. So I decided to give it a shot and I was lucky to find work with eminent theatre people like Mohan Maharishi, Kumara Verma, William Shepherd and Frederic Herrara. I worked under their care, learning the nuances of a new form from them. Soon, theatre was no stranger to me.”

With about 20 purposeful productions to his name, Kaul could not have thought of looking back though he had more lucrative options in the world of media. Landing into a production as coveted as Amrit Sagar’s “1971” was no easy job for Kaul. “It took years of dedication. Finally, I was spotted by Gautam Kishanchandani who earlier handled the casting for “Black Friday”. He was looking for tall people and I fitted the bill on the physical and professional front.”
