Cricket buffs worship Tendulkar: Mongia Chandigarh, July 11 The left hander, cricketer, back for a short period in the city, said “Sachin is a legend and beyond comparison.” “Though cricket buffs worship him as God but he is also a human being who can suffers injuries and have a bad patch like any other cricketer,” said Mongia at DAV Coaching Centre, Sector 8, here today. Returning midway from England to join cricket camp for the Indian cricket team at Bangalore, Mongia expressed his satisfaction over his performance there. Though his bat could not produce any century there yet his averages, both in batting and bowling were the best for his county. “As we represent India and play as professional cricketer in the counties so we always try to maintain high standards of the game there”, said Mongia. On the issue of introduction of new rules in the cricket, he pleaded his ignorance about these. “At the moment I cannot comment on the issue as I have no idea about the rules but after playing some matches these could be well understood”, said Mongia. He termed the stint with former Indian coach John Wright as great. “It was an honour to play under the guidelines of Wright. We learnt a lot from him”, said Mongia. He was also full of praise for Greg Chappell, the new coach for the Indian team. “We are looking forward to having him as a coach and hope his training will have a positive impact on our game”, added Mongia. On the feasibility of 20-20 cricket, he said it was good for small countries like England but in big countries like India it would be impractical to go from here to Chennai just to play a 20 overs match. Mongia expressed his happiness over the reappointment of Intikhab Alam as a coach of Punjab Ranji team. In the same breath he criticised the step of the Sports Authority of India to transfer Sukhwinder Bawa, cricket coach at DAV Coaching Centre at Sector 8, from Chandigarh to Punjab. “Bawa had been conducting the centre for last 10 years and many cricketers had achieved the heights of the game under his guidance. The SAI should do a rethink on such transfers”, said Mongia. |
