Hundreds of tourists and other passengers were put to a great hardship throughout the day following a major traffic jam due to re-carpeting of the Chandigarh -Shimla highway by the Haryana Public Works Department, here today.

ZP poll: workers to get two-hour leave

In the wake of the Zila Parishad election tomorrow, the UT Election Commissioner has directed the owners of private establishments, factories and shops to allow short leave of two hours to their workers so that they can cast their votes tomorrow.

To facilitate entrepreneurs, especially those of the medium and small scale companies, to set up their ventures and to give a major impetus to the upcoming Chandigarh Technology Parks, Gen (Retd) S.F. US graduate fellowship for city youth

City-based Karan Singh, a proud holder of electrical and computer engineering degrees from an American university, has been awarded a Tau Beta Pi graduate fellowship. A former student of St John’s High School, Sector 26, he is a son of Mr P.J. Singh, an industrialist, and Dr Rajinder Kaur, a lecturer at Government College for Girls, Sector 11. Karan was one of the 35 students selected from among 181 applicants for the prestigious Tau-Beta Pi-James Life Fellowship,

PU Employment Exchange in name only
Chandigarh, July 2
The Employment Exchange and guidance bureau of Panjab University is existing only in name. Though it is the only centre for the registration of unemployed post-graduate students, it is not equipped to serve the purpose of the students. The “indifference” of higher officials in the Employment Exchange and the university officials has made the situation worse. One reason of the indifference of the university towards this cell can be that various departments on the camps have their own guidance cells which are offering a lot of job opportunities also.

A seminar on “Recent trends in professional education — an overview,” conducted today by Ms Usha Albuquerque, a prominent career counsellor, met with a packed house. The National Trust has been working for the welfare of mental patients afflicted with retardation, cerebral palsy, autism and multiple disabilities.

Amardeep Bhatia streamrolled 8th seed Rupinder Singh by five racks to three (5-3) in the opening match of Ch Vishnu Pal Singh Memorial 9 Ball Pool Prize Money Tournament that commenced at the Chandigarh Billiards and Coaching Center, Sector 22, here, today. In another match of the day, it was a one-sided affair in which seeded player Anand Sharma defeated Ankur Makkar by five racks to two (5-2). Manav Dhawan could not face the challenge posed by Surender Singh in the next tie.
