Eight killed in J and K

Srinagar, June 29
Four security personnel and two militants were among eight persons killed and a village defence committee member was abducted in Jammu and Kashmir where ultras exploded a grenade in the heart of Srinagar, injuring 11 pedestrians and three policemen today.

The grenade was lobbed by unidentified militants towards a police party at the exchange road near the BSNL office around 11.50 am. There was a heavy rush of pedestrians at that time, a police spokesman said here.

The grenade exploded on the road, injuring 14 persons, including three policemen and a woman, he said.

The injured were shifted to SMHS hospital where their condition was stated to be stable, the spokesman said.

The blast caused panic at busy Lal Chowk and its adjacent areas and traffic remained blocked for around 15 minutes as people ran helter-skelter after the explosion. Normal activities, however, resumed after the injured were shifted to hospital.

In a fierce gunbattle in Doda district, four security personnel and a militant were killed, the spokesman said.

The encounter took place last evening when police, assisted by security forces, raided a house in the upper Chaka area in Bhaderwah following information about the presence of militants.

The hiding militants opened heavy fire on the search party and in the ensuing encounter, two CRPF personnel, two special police officers and an ultra were killed, he said. The deceased were identified as SPOs Sanjay Kumar and Mintoo Kumar. The slain militant was Riaz Ahmad of Marmat-Doda.

The CRPF men have been identified as Shakti Velu and Anees Phillip. Three houses were also gutted during the encounter that ended today, he said.

In another encounter, the spokesman said, an unidentified militant was killed by security forces at Tarabal village in Gurez sector of Baramula district today.

A house where the militant had taken shelter was gutted during the gunfight, he said.

Militants abducted a ration dealer, Bashir Ahmad, from his house at Jamalan-Mahore in Udhampur district last night and later killed him by slitting his throat, the spokesman said.

One more civilian, Abdul Hamid, Lone, was killed and another, Abdul Rashid Khan, was injured when troops of the Rashtriya Rifles opened fire, mistaking the duo as militants, at Khagmulla in the Panzla area of Rafiabad in Baramulla district early today, official sources said.

The incident sparked protests by local people, they said.

The spokesman said militants kidnapped VDC member Ghulam Hussain from his house at Chatru in Doda district last night.

Hussain was taken to an undisclosed destination by militants at gunpoint. Operations had been launched to trace him, he said.

The security forces arrested two Hizbul Mujahideen militants, and seized two rifles and some grenades from them in Pulwama district yesterday.

The security forces seized a wireless set, two hand grenades and four rifle grenades from Doodganga river bank at Bulbulbagh in uptown Srinagar, the spokesman said.

He said the security forces also seized five hand grenades, two AK magazines and 56 rounds of cartridges from Wapzan village in Bijbehara of Anantnag district last evening. — PTI

No threat of flood from Jhelum
Tribune News Service

Srinagar, June 29
With the abrupt rise in the temperatures in Kashmir valley over the past week, leading to fast melting of snow in the upper reaches, water level in the Jhelum has risen, though it is not regarded as alarming.

Its level has been measured at 14.95 ft at Ram Munshi Bagh here today, about 3 ft below the mark of 18 ft, when the flood alert is declared.

“This is not alarming and there is no immediate cause of concern”, said Mr A.R. Beigh, Superintending Engineer, Irrigation and Flood Control Department, here.

He said the melting of snow was taking place at a faster pace due to higher temperatures, which had led to the rise in the water level of the Jhleum.

In case, fast melting of snow was now coupled with rainfall it would create an alarming situation, he maintained.

The river, having its source at Verinag in south Kashmir, had 163 tributaries, which were all flowing above normal level, Mr Beigh told The Tribune.

The department had, however, started its vigil over the rising levels in the Jhelum, which was being monitored at Sangam in Anantnag district of south Kashmir, Ram Munshi Bagh, and at Asham in Baramulla, after which the river merges with the Wullar lake.

The repair work along the embankments was also being undertaken in order to over come any eventuality.

Giving comparative figures, the superintendent said the water level at Ram Munshi Bagh had been recorded at 8.75 ft on this day last year, and 10.29 ft in 2003.

As on June 1 this year, the level at Sangam was measured at 12.4 ft., while it was recorded at 9.4 ft last year and 14.85 in 2003.

Mr Beigh said the main tributaries of the river in south Kashmir include Lidder, Vessu, Rambiara. As of now the overall rise in the water level was more than 6 ft, which had led to panic in the public, he added.
