Staff praised for efficiency

The B.Ed aspirants who converged at local Government College for Boys for getting their roll numbers were not the only ones to undergo trying time. College staff members, too, had a tough time while grappling with the work load.

A press note released by Dr C.L. Narang, Coordinator, B.Ed entrance test 2005 and the Principal, Mr D.S. Gill said smooth distribution of roll numbers to 5000 B.Ed. aspirants was possible only due to co-operation by staff members of the local Government College.

Dr C. L. Narang, Coordinator, B.Ed entrance test, said without effective management by the college faculty members this task was impossible. Credit went to the staff members who worked continuously for three days. Ten counters consisting of three to four staff members were installed for the purpose

Mr D. S. Gill said proper vigilance and spade work done by teaching and non-teaching staff members made the roll number distribution a success. Even on Sunday, members of staff reported for duty.

Eye check-up camp

SPS Apollo Hospitals here will organise a series of free health check-up camps.
The hospital will observe a free eye check-up week from June 20 to 25. Giving this information, Dr Harpreet C. Singh, consultant ophthalmology, said cataract and glaucoma were the two major problems that were affecting a vast segment of the population in Punjab. These diseases could be easily treated but ignorance, coupled with high cost of quality treatment stood in the way of the patients.

Green XI sail to 8-wicket win

An impressive spell of bowling (five for 25), including a hat-trick, by Drone Kanish of Sacred Heart Convent Senior Secondary School, Sarabha Nagar, enabled Coaching Centre Green XI to register a comfortable 8-wicket victory over Coaching Centre Yellow XI in the inaugural match of the first phase of the ninth Chaman Lal Malhotra Cricket Cup Tournament (u-14) which began at Arya College ground, here today. Dr S.M. Sharma, Principal, Arya College inaugurate the tournament.

Three teams comprising trainees of the coaching centre being run by the Ludhiana District Cricket Association have been formed. These teams will play matches on round-robin league basis and at the conclusion, a team comprising players from all the teams will be chosen to take part in the inter-district tournament to be organised by Punjab Cricket Association.

Salil Verma, captain of the Coaching Centre, Yellow XI, won the toss and decided to bat first. Despite good batting by Salil Verma, Ketan Dhir and Abhishek Talwar, their innings folded at 154 runs in 27 overs. The wrecker-in chief for Coaching Centre Green XI was left-arm spinner, Drone Kanish who bowled seven overs and scalped five victims.

Coaching Centre Green XI began their reply on a strong foot as the opening pair of Sunny Pandey, student of Bhartiya Vidya Mandir School and Paras Mehndiratta of Wyile Memorial Public School gave a flying start, hoisting 153 runs for the first wicket. They surpassed the rival’s total in the 33rd overs after losing two wickets.

Basketball camp begins today

Ludhiana, June 19
The names of four Punjab cagers namely Talwinder Singh, Yadwinder Singh, Jagdeep Singh and Jasjot Singh, figure in the 14-member list of probables for the national coaching camp, which starts at Guru Nanak Indoor Stadium, here on Monday.

According to Mr Teja Singh Dhaliwal, honorary secretary, Punjab Basketball Association, the probables would attend the camp prior to the finalising the Indian team for the qualifying round of Middle Asia Zone for the 23rd FIBA-Asia Basketball Championship scheduled to be held from July 6 to 10 at Talktora Stadium, New Delhi.

Other probables are: Shabeer Ahmed, Murleekrishna and S Sridhar (all Uttranchal), Trideep Singh and Riyazuddin (Railways), Mihit Pandey, S Robinson and Chandershekhar R (all Tamil Nadu), H Ldinsanga (Mizoram) and Shiv Kumar (Jharkhand).

Mr J P Singh of Jharkhand and Mr Amarjeet Singh of Uttar Pradesh have been appointed coaches for the camp.

City cagers for international meet

Three city cagers — Jagdeep Singh, Yadwinder Singh of Baba Ludhiana Academy and Talwinder Singh have achieved a rare distinction as they have been selected by the FIBA to take part in the first international basketball meet being organised by the International Basketball Federation in collaboration with the NBA from July 14 to 17 at Beijing, China. The meet is called 'basketball without borders'. OC

Pawandeep brings laurels to state

Mandi Ahmedgarh, June 19
Pawandeep Singh, a resident of Amarpura mohalla here, has brought laurels to the state by winning gold medal in the Sub-Junior National Power Lifting Championship that concluded in Rajasthan recently. The championship was organised by the Indian Powerlifting Federation, New Delhi.

He bagged the medal in the 82 kg category. He had earlier won gold medals in bench press and power lifting in the state championship.

Pawandeep Singh had earlier brought laurels to the nation by finishing runner-up in the World Sub-Junior Powerlifting Championship held in South Africa in 2004.

Accompanied by his coach Baljit Singh Bobby, Pawandeep said he also secured distinguished positions in bench press, squat and dead lift to secure silver medal.

Various local organisations, including the Journalist Association, the Super Jatindra Pipes, the Sukjhmani Sewa Society, the Muslim Youth Front and the Shri Ram Mandir Trust felicitated him at a function organised at Sanatan Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School.
