No cause for alarm on monsoon front
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 14
The government today stressed that there was no cause for alarm with regard to foodgrain production claiming that the monsoon was likely to be “satisfactory” despite being late as was the situation in 2003.

“The situation today is similar to that of 2003 and only two divisions have received excess rainfall so far.

But that year (2003) finally saw a bounty rainfall”, senior Agriculture Ministry officials said.

They said the situation could be salvaged, though it was too early to project any production target for 2005-06.

The meeting of the Crop-Weather Watch Group, headed by Agriculture Secretary Radha Singh yesterday took stock of the situation and it was felt that the monsoon would advance further in the next few days.
