PCCTU hails Bhattal panel report

Sahnewal, June 14
The Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union today hailed the Bhattal Committee report on primary education.
In a joint statement, Prof R.S. Brar, state president, Dr Parminder Singh, area secretary, Prof Kuldeep Singh, Prof Bandeep Singh and Prof Khushvinder Kumar, all executive committee members, have welcomed the recommendations of the committee headed by Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal regarding the issue of non-privatisation of primary education.

Terming it as a ‘positive’ shift, the union expressed the hope that the day was not far when the recommendations of the Johal committee report would also get a nod from the government. They said ultimately the government had made an attempt to reach unto the poor sections of society and broaden its base by making education a proud privilege for all.

10-day summer camp concludes

Ludhiana, June 14
A 10-day summer camp held at Everest Public Senior Secondary School, Moti Nagar, concluded here today.
The motive behind organising the camp was to bring to surface the hidden talent of children and inspire them to pursue creativity.

Students took part in various activities, including yoga, sports, martial arts and cultural programmes. They were also given training in dance and music. Dr Inderpal Singh, former Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, presided over the function.

The function started with the lighting a lamp. Mr Rajinder Sharma, president, Association of the Punjab School Education Board Affiliated Schools, highlighted the importance of yoga saying it had become a rage in the USA and western countries.

Counselling session: The Lovely Institute Career Guidance Centre will organise a one-day free counselling session on personality development on June 23. The students will be told about proper usage of language, confidence development and team-working etc.

Summer camp: A 15-day summer camp at Baba Ishar Singh Senior Secondary Public School, BRS Nagar, concluded here on Tuesday. A large number of students attended the camp and learnt various activities like art, craft, pot painting, fabric painting and flower making.

Docs keen on promoting voluntary blood donation

To commemorate the birth anniversary of Karl Landsteiner, the father of Transfusion Medicine, the International Blood Donation Day was celebrated at Dayanand Medical College and hospital (DMCH) under the aegis of the health education cell.

The chief guest, Mr Prem Gupta, secretary, managing society of the hospital, and the guest of honour, Dr L.S. Chawla, former Principal of DMCH and founder Vice-Chancellor of the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, gave away awards to over 50 distinguished blood donors and organisations that had been contributing to the success of the blood donation movement.

Among the donors, recognised at the function, were representatives from educational institutions, industrial and business houses, service clubs, youth sports clubs, charitable institutions and other welfare associations from all over Punjab.

Mr Sudhir Modgil, who has donated blood 89 times, along with Dr Sandeep Puri, Dr J.S. Sekhon, Dr G.S. Bajwa, Dr S. Budhiraja, Dr Rajesh Arya, all of whom have donated blood for more than 25 times, were also honoured at the function.

Dr J.G. Jolly, Professor Emeritus, PGIMER, Chandigarh, delivered a guest lecture on this occasion. Dr Rajoo Singh Chhina, Medical Superintendent of DMCH, remarked that among the various blood centres in the region, the Department of Transfusion Medicine in this institution could be adjudged as the leading centre of academic activities in this field.

A serious effort was being made to raise the status of the department so as to ensure the feasibility of introducing post-graduate training programme in this speciality.

Dr Daljit Singh, Principal, Dr Sandeep Puri, Medical Superintendent and Dr Amarjit Kaur, Head, Department of Transfusion Medicine at DMCH, were among others present at the function.

Meanwhile, Mr Anurag Verma, Deputy Commissioner, has exhorted the NGOs, medical associations and religious institutions to come forward for the promotion of the noble cause of blood donation.

He was addressing a well-attended function organised to mark the International Blood Donation Day before inaugurating a mass blood donation camp organised by Sant Nirankari Mandal at Nirankari Bhawan here.

More than 400 persons donated blood at the camp which was handed over to blood banks in different city hospitals, including those run by District Red Cross Society, Dr B.L. Kapoor Memorial Hospital, Deepak Hospital and Guru Teg Bhadhaur Charitable Hospital.

Mr Verma stressed the need to create awareness among the masses about blood donation, since a single unit of blood could save a life.

Giving details of the contribution of the District Red Cross Society in providing blood to the needy patients, the Deputy Commissioner informed that during last year, 40 blood donation camps were organised and 4257 units of blood were collected which included replacement and voluntary blood donations.

Out of these, 341 units of blood were collected for the Thalassaemic patients.

Mr H.S. Chawla, Zonal Incharge, Sant Nirankari Mandal, Punjab Zone, said the mandal was organising such blood donation camps since 1986 and till date 28,734 units of blood were collected by organising 140 camps.

Free medical camp

Samrala, June 14
NRI Harbans Singh Kang from the USA organised a free medical camp in the hospital of Dr Tej Pal Singh here today in the memory of his wife, Mrs Ranjit Kaur.
More than 650 patients were examined by the specialists like Dr Gurpreet Singh of Hero Heart Centre, Dr Manoj Kumar, Dr Varinder Gupta, Dr Hardev Singh, Dr Tejpal Singh and Mrs Tarkjot Singh.

Apart from free medicines, ultrasound tests, X-rays and ECG facilities were provided.

The camp was inaugurated by the local MLA, Mr Amrik Singh Dhillon and Mr Balbir Singh Rajewal, national general secretary of the Bharti Kisan Union.

Baljinder excels in badminton meets

Ludhiana, June 14
Baljinder Singh has made his presence felt in the Life Insurance Corporation of India All India-Badminton Tournaments during the past couple of years. Baljinder, working as cashier and posted here at Unit-I office, Bhadaur House, has been the champion since 1997 and has the honour of donning the colours in the zonal level badminton tournaments.

Last year, Baljinder, during this tournament held at Jaipur, stormed into the final but failed at the last hurdle and had to be content with the runners-up trophy. He also represented Ludhiana Division in the All-India Badminton Tournament at Dehra Dun, organised recently and gave a good account of himself. Baljinder will spearhead the Ludhiana Division’s challenge in the forthcoming zonal level tournament to be held at Ajmer in July.

For his excellent performance during these tournaments, Mr D K Bhagat, Senior Divisional Manager, LIC of India, Ludhiana, who is also president of the LIC Employees’ Sports and Recreation Club, gave the promising shuttler Baljinder Singh a cash prize of Rs 1,000 and an appreciation letter. Baljinder also bagged the title in the Inter-Branch Table Tennis Tournament organised by the LIC Employees’ Sports and Recreation Club at its divisional office, Dugri, on June 11.
