VEDANT offers course in VLSI design
Mohali, June 14 Training during the course is given at the four “VEDANT centres of excellence” which includes a unique opportunity of design realisation on silicon through SCL’s India Chip Programme. The six-month course covers all aspects of VLSI design. The course curriculam is based on a project-centric approach recommended by VLSI experts. Real life projects are assigned at the beginning of the course that provide an opportunity to grasp and correlate theory to real life applications. Training is imparted on Mentor Graphics and Cadence EDA tools at VEDANT-Chandigarh. Admission to the course is done twice a year through an entrance test (nationwide). Batches start in January and July every year. The centre has asked for applications from B.E./B.Tech (Electronics, Instrumentation, Telecommunications, Electrical) or M.Sc Physics with Electronics students. The last date for submission of forms is June 18 and the entrance test date is June 19. The result would be declared on June 20 and counselling and admission would be done on June 21 and June 22. The batch would commence on July 18. Paying guest accommodation is available within walking distance from the complex in adjacent Sectors 71 and 70 and Phase III and V of Mohali. Monthly charges for boarding and lodging range from Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000 per month. However, most students use SCL canteen facility and generally opt for dormitory accommodation in which case the cost per month gets reduced to almost half. |

14 It is the only college in the city offering B.Sc (non-medical) with electronics as an elective subject and Honours in botany, zoology and chemistry to B.Sc (medical) students. Cashing in on the growing importance to IT, the college is also offering post-graduate courses in information technology. Other market-driven courses include BCA, M SC (IT). Navneet Shoat of BCA III has brought laurels to the college and has been a topper in Panjab University. Manor Shard has stood second in PU. Commerce, Punjabi, English and a diploma course in computer application (PGDCA) are also there. At the undergraduate level, the college runs bachelor courses in arts, science (medical and non-medical), and commerce. In vocational courses, it offers functional English and in add-on courses, it offers entrepreneurship in small business, banking management and insurance business. Besides this, the college has incorporated several positive features. The Environment Society comprising 50 volunteers create-awareness about environment. "Green festival", an inter-college environmental competition, is organised by the society on February 2. The college was established in 1966 by the Sikh Educational Society (SES) as a tercentennial memorial to Guru Gobind Singh. The SGGSC is one of the six premier educational institutions run by the SES. It has recently been raised to the status of a deemed postgraduate institution. The NAAC has awarded the college accreditation of B++ for its achievements. The college is sprawled over on 10 acres and has 157 faculty members, including administrative and non-teaching staff. In sports, the college has carved a niche for itself at the inter-college and inter-varsity levels. It has been holding a runners-up trophy for general efficiency for the past seven years. The institution is an active participant in extra co -curricular activities. The NSS unit consists of 200 volunteers while the NCC (army wing) has 108 students. To give impetus to creative skills, the college magazine "Agammi Jyot" is published every year. On the campus operates a sexual harassment cell and Bhai Kanhiya health centre. The college has hostel facility for 200 boys and girls. With a strength of 2,180 students the college has a well-stocked library, modern labs, museum, and a seminar hall. The prospectus is available from June 14 and the last date for the submission of norms is June 30. |
Landran college ties up with UK university
Mohali, June 14 Mr Satnam Singh Sandhu, Chairman, CEC, who is back from the UK after finalising the modalities for the tie-up, said a high-powered team of the UK-based university would visit their institute this month to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU). He said the CEC had started the process for the mutual association in February and invited a team of academicians from Wolverhampton University to their college. The university team, after assessing the CEC for various academic and professional parameters, invited its management to Wolverhampton University. They also held discussions with Professor Gattings, Dean Academics and Prof Robert Moreton, Dean of Schools, who apprised the CEC team of the academic programmes in computer science and application, electronics and communications, mechanical and electrical engineering and business administration. They also met Krystyna Nosek, industrial placements officer and discussed the scope for higher studies and placements in UK, said Mr Sandhu. He revealed that Wolverhampton University had also offered to start their courses at the CEC. “We will write to the All-India Council for Technical Education and Punjab Technical University regarding the proposal and seek their permission to start the courses,” he said. Mr R.S. Dhaliwal, general secretary of the college said they discussed areas of mutual cooperation. “They also promised better placements to our students abroad,” he said. He stated that both institutes would work towards curriculum development, teachers training, research, consultancy and placements. “We are giving final touches to the proposal for implementation. The university would also offer financial concessions to our students taking admission at Wolverhampton University,” he said. |
Court moved over
purchase of low-floor buses
Chandigarh, June 14 In his petition, Mr Arvind Thakur alleged that the UT Administration was buying the buses which had been “rejected” by other states in the wake of serious defects. The court will take up the matter tomorrow. Mr Thakur alleged that 14 such buses which were purchased over a year ago, had been giving poor performance. These had proved to be costlier than other buses as they gave a low fuel average. He alleged that the rear-side engine added more pollution. Meanwhile, certain defects pointed out to the company during inspection were yet to be rectified even during the second was stage of inspection which conducted on May 19. The CTU is likely to add 102 new buses to its fleet by next month. The Administration had decided to purchase the buses and introduce the “grid system” with a view to improving the functioning of the public transport system. Even city transport unions are divided on the purchase of the buses which are touted to be conforming to the latest standards and fuel-efficiency by officials. While certain unions have thrown their lot with the Administration on the issue, others are opposing the purchase. Apart from the senior functionaries of the Administration, Mr Thakur had even made the CTU Employees Union and the CTU Conductors Union respondents in the petition. |

R.K. Kakkar, Ms Renuka Rai Walia, Mr Pawan Mittal and Mr Om Prakash — had filed an application before the court on June 9, requesting for a stay on the MC meeting scheduled for June 11. They had alleged that there were certain procedural lapses in holding the meeting. The court had turned down their plea for stay and the elections were subsequently held, where Mr Tarun Bhandari was elected as president. |
