Farmers to get 50 cr for diversification

The Punjab Governor, Gen S F Rodrigues (retired ) was concerned about the plight of the Punjab farmers and was keen on improving their economic condition. The governor wanted that some practical steps should be taken to diversify the agriculture pattern in Punjab.

Gen Rodrigues held a series of meetings with the agricultural experts and would now meet the political leaders to elicit their views on the diversification of agriculture.

The Governor held a meeting with Dr Kalkat and Dr K S Aulakh, Vice-Chancellor, Punjab Agricultural University on Friday and discussed with them the plans for launching new agricultural crops in the state. Dr Aulakh said here today that a plan had been chalked out under which the farmers would be encouraged to sow soyabean in 100 acres this year. The Punjab Markfed would buy all soyabean produce at a minimum prices fixed by the Union Government.

A 100 farmers in the state had been selected and one acre each of their farms would be sown with soyabean. The PAU would supply soyabean seed free of cost to these selected farmers.

Similarly Dr Aulakh and Dr Kalkat apprised the Governor of the plan to sow 100 acres of moong variety SML 668 during the current kharif season. The produce of this pulse would also be purchased by the Punjab Marked at the rate of Rs 1520 per quintal- the minimum price of the same. The Punjab Markfed would purchase soyabean at the rate of Rs 1050/- per quintal from the farmers.

The Govenor told them that the state government had agreed to provide a sum of Rs 50 crore for diversification plans in the state to begin with . The state government had earlier promised to give Rs 100 crore for the same.

Pak farm scientists meet PAU VC

Dr K.S. Aulakh, Vice-Chancellor of the Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana and Dr Bashir Ahmad, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Agriculture Faislabad today observed that there was a lot to share on the agricultural development between India and Pakistan in general and the two parts of Punjab in particular.

Dr Ahmad who is leading a high-level delegation of agricultural scientists today met the Vice-Chancellor Dr Aulakh in the PAU campus today. The two VCs accompanied by senior scientists from the two universities held a detailed discussion on the issues of common concern and interest.

The scientists agreed in principle to maintain a close rapport with each other and share among themselves various techniques of common interest. They pointed out the agricultural development was a priority in both the countries and both could benefit a lot from each other’s experiences. The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment that the scientists would learn from each others’ experiences.

Other members in the delegation from Pakistan included Dr Hafiz Abdul Qayum, Dr Saee Ahma, Dr Khalid Mustafa, Dr Muhammad Ashfaq Rana, Dr Mumtaz Akhtar Cheema, Dr Gulam Mustafa, Dr FArooq Ahmad and Dr Amer Javed.

Exam cancellation: students feel cheated

The students who had passed the PMT exams conducted by Baba Farid University are disappointed over the decision of cancellation of the exams. The exams were taken for the admission of medical courses like MBBS and BDS on Sunday. But the reports published by The Tribune about the leakage of the question papers forced university authorities to take action and the Vice-Chancellor of the university recommended the cancellation of the exams.

Many students expressed their disappointment over the decision while talking to Ludhiana Tribune and said they were being punished for the crime committed by others.

Mr Nishant Batta who had got 48th rank in this exams by securing 640 marks said he had worked hard to got admission in the MBBS and now when he was set to achieve his goal, the university was punishing him for its own fault. He said the university should punish the guilty employees and officers involved in the paper leakage scam. His uncle K.K. Batta demanded that the exams should not be cancelled but the Vice-Chancellor and Registrar should be removed from their posts.

Ravi Krishan Singh, who got 47th rank in C category, Navreet Kaur who bagged 94th rank in C Category, Shubam who got 128th rank and Gagan and Karanjot Kaur, who both got 419th rank by securing 572 marks, said that the decision of the university had upset them.

PAU starts admissions for 2005-06

Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, has started admission process to various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes for 2005-06. The last date for receipt of applications was May 23, 2005, but was extended to June 6, 2005 for B. Sc Agri (Hons), B V Sc and A H And M V Sc programmes after the decision to make admissions for B V Sc and A H and M V Sc programmes also by the PAU.

For admission to various masters’ programmes in college of Basic Sciences and Humanities, the entrance tests Master Entrance Test (MET), Basic Sciences and MET-physics are scheduled to be held on June 9 and for MET-chemistry on June 10. MET- agribusiness, the entrance test for admission to MBA Agribusiness will be held on June 17. Group discussion and interview for admission to this programme will be held on June 20. The admission to MBA programme will be made on the basis of MAT score and the group discussion and interview for this programme will be held on June 18 and 19.

The common entrance test (CET) for admission to B.Sc Agri (Hons ) and B V Sc and A H programmes will be held on June 23. Giving there detail, Dr S s Chahal, controller of Examinations, could that about 1900 candidates had applied for admission to these programmes.

MET-home science, the entrance test for admission to masters’ programmes in college of Home Science will be held on June 28. MET-agricultural engineering and MET-engineering, the entrance tests for admission to Masters’ programmes in college of Agricultural Engineering will be held on July 4 and 5 respectively.

Dr Kirpal Singh Aulakh, Vice-Chancellor, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana said that one innovative farmer of Punjab would be honoured with “Parwasi Bharti Award” on the occasion of Kisan Mela to be held September atin PAU campus. The award carries Rs 8,000/- in cash along with a plaque and citation.

Giving information about this award, Dr S S Gill, Director, Extension Education, said that this award has been instituted by a former teacher of PAU Dr Maninderjit Singh, at present residing in Australia. Dr Gill said that the prescribed forms for the selection of an innovative farmer was available from the offices of all the Chief Agrilcutral. Officers of Punjab, Farm Advisory Service Centres and the Directorate of Extension Education, PAU, Ludhiana. The forms duly filled in by the candidates should reach the office of the Director, Extension Education, PAU, Ludhiana latest by July 20.

Nancy 4th in dist in matric exam

Doraha, June 7
Nancy Kapila of Sri Guru Harkrishan Public School, Doraha, with 91 per cent marks has secured 4th position in the district and 10th in the state in the matric results of Punjab School Education Board.

A total of four students of the school, including Nancy Kapila, figure in the merit list. The other three students in the merit list are Gurleen Kaur (88 per cent), Omit Kumar (86 per cent) and Palkeen Kaur (85 per cent). Those who have secured above 80 per cent marks are Navdeep Singla, Savleen Kaur and Harpreet Kaur.

The director of the school, Mrs Umal Kaur, has congratulated the Principal, Mr Mathhew Varghese, the staff and the students for showing 100 per cent result.

Ishar Singh schoolchildren shine in Class X

Students of Baba Ishar Singh (N) Senior Secondary Public School, B.R.S. Nagar, have shown excellent matriculation results, declared by the PSEB Gagandeep Singh Matharoo secured 91.2 per cent marks and stood 2nd in Ludhiana district. In the examination, nine students secured above 85 per cent marks, 15 students got more then 80 percent marks, 75 students got first division and 55 students passed their matric exam with second division.

President of the school trust, Mr Manmohan Singh Chahal, congratulated the school principal, Ms Aneeta Kundra, parents, teachers and students for the outstanding performance.

The trust announced that students in the merit list would be given scholarship.

Workshop on electronics: A two-week workshop on Importance of electronics in today’s world, being conducted for students of the BCA by the GGN Institute of Management and Technology at its campus was inaugurated here yesterday by the director of the institute, Mr Kuldip Singh.

The resource person, Mr Sushil Kumar, stressed on the importance of various hardware devices, their working, repair and assembling. The entire programme is intended to equip the students with thorough understanding of computers.

As a part of the programme, the guest speaker, Mr R.S. Klair, Professor and HOD, Electronics & Communication, T.I.F.T., Patiala, would be visiting the campus on June 11. Mr Kuldip Singh and the coordinator, Mr Gunwant Singh Dua, appreciated the efforts of the faculty members.

Yoga camp at Spring Dale school: A yoga camp, which was held at Spring Dale Senior Secondary Public School for 15 days, concluded here today.

All teachers participated in the camp. They were told about the importance of yoga in life.

Ms Avinash Kaur Walia, founder Principal, and Ms Sandeep Raikhi, Principal of the school also participated in the camp. Ms Mona, member of the Bhartiya yog sansthan’ was the organiser of the camp.
