Health Dept to fix accountability of doctors
Tribune News Service

Panchkula, June 7
Next time you come across a seriously injured person, do not have second thoughts about rushing him to General Hospital here. With the hospital here having developed a reputation of not treating serious cases and immediately referring such patients either to the PGI or Government Medical College and Hospital, Chandigarh, the residents had started relying on the healthcare services in neighbouring Chandigarh.

But the Health Department, Haryana, now proposes to change this. With the General Hospital being regarded as the face the of Health Department (they are in the same complex), the department now proposes to fix accountability of doctors who refer patients without reason. The Health Minister, Ms Kartar Devi, said today that doctors would have to specify the reason why patients were being referred to other hospitals when the best healthcare facilities were available here.

The minister was in town to dedicate the newly installed ortho pantomo gram (for full mouth computerised X-Ray) and electro encephalo gram machines (for electrical recording of brain) and formal inauguration of the office of the Sub-Registrar, Births and Deaths, at the General Hospital, Panchkula. She also gave away birth certificates to the parents of six newly born babies.

The minister minced no words as she cautioned doctors posted at the various community and primary health centres in the state against absenteeism. “I have received numerous complaints regarding doctors not being present at the health centres. Do your duty selflessly, and do not create a situation for punishment,” she warned.

Talking of female foeticide, she said there was a need to change the mindset of the people so as to make them welcome the birth of a daughter in the family. The Haryana Government had introduced a scheme under which Rs 5,000 would be deposited in the joint account of the daughter and mother per year for five years on the birth of second daughter.

The Deputy Commissioner, Panchkula, Mr Brijendra Singh, Director-General, Health Services, Sushma Madan and Director, Health Services, N. K. Sharma also spoke on the occasion.
