PAU evaluation panel meeting
Ludhiana, June 5 Dr Sarjit Singh Gill, Director, Extension Education, Dr Gulzar Singh Chahal, Additional Director, research and other members of the research evaluation committee were present on the occasion. Dr N S Malhi, Head, Department of Plant Breeding, Genetics and Biotechnology and Secretary of the Research Evaluation Committee, presented the proposals for discussion. After discussing all aspects, the committee recommended proposal of maize hybrid JH-3851, PMH-2 to be sown in Punjab under irrigated conditions. Proposal of Bajra hybrid PHB-2168 for conducting adaptive trials in KVK farms has also been recommended. |
Nadira inaugurates theatre workshop
Ludhiana, June 5 Speaking on the occasion, Mr Sunil Kant Munjal, president, LSS, explained the concept and idea behind the workshop and highlighted the role of the LSS which had contributed to enriching the cultural fabric of the city by bringing here artistes of national fame. This helped in bringing flavour of rich Indian culture to the mainstream and creating a new
generation of art loving people. The children theatre workshop conducted by Nadira Babbar will be in three age-groups and venue for this will be Delhi Public School and BCM Arya School. |
Camp for handicapped draws good response
Ludhiana, June 5 A team of doctors led by Dr Adi Narayan Rao from Vishakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) would perform polio operations of 200 to 300 patients on June 5 and 6 while the rest of the patients in need of corrective surgery, will have to reach Vishakhapatnam before June 10 where they would be operated upon free of cost. Those undergoing operations here and at Vishakhapatnam would be provided free medicines along with free boarding and lodging facilities, according to Dr Rao. During the camp artificial limbs would also be provided free of cost to accident victims and other physically challenged persons with the joint efforts of Bhagwan Mahavir Sahayta Samiti, Jaipur and Bharat Vikas Parishad, Ludhiana. Mr Surinder Dawar, Parliamentary Secretary, Power, and Urban Development, Punjab, who inaugurated the camp, remarked that the initiative taken by the organisers was true service of the humanity. There could be no more noble deed that making physically challenged persons self-reliant and enabling them to earn their own livelihood. He claimed that the state government had also made provisions to provide reservation to the physically challenged persons in government jobs as a step towards their rehabilitation. Speaking at the occasion, Mr Rakesh Jain, president of Mahavir Jain Yuvak Mandal said that the organisers had made elaborate arrangements for providing free medicines as well as free boarding and lodging facilities for all the patients and their attendants during the surgical treatment and a post-operative convalescence period of 10 days. Focusing on the activities of the mandal, its functionaries informed that the Northern Zone of the body was formed in 1974 with the aim of optimising utilisation of tremendous energy of the youth so that they could contribute towards betterment of the society and the nation. “At present the zonal unit of mandal has 42 branches in different cities, towns and villages which are serving the mankind in different forms, spreading the cause of education while at the same time inculcating the good and righteous virtues and cultural values among the youth.” Stating the underlying idea behind the massive initiative to assist the physically challenged persons, Mr Rakesh Jain said being physically handicapped was a curse. Physically challenged persons, being dependent on others, were compelled to lead a helpless, hopeless and a pathetic life. “Among such critically ill or crippled persons, there are a quite a few who can not seek proper treatment for their ailments or prosthetics to become self-sufficient and lead a normal life. The mandal has taken the responsibility of providing all possible assistance to such persons and the 10-day camp is the first step in this direction,” he added. Among other speakers at the function were Mr Sanjeev Jain, chairman, Mr Prafful Jain, vice president, Mr Azad Jain, secretary of the mandal, Mr Vivek Jain and Mr Kuldip Jain. |

Prabhjot, Manjit, Jaswant to be honoured
Ludhiana, June 5 Addressing a press conference here today, Mr Ramesh Singla and Mr Prithipal Singh Batala, chairman and president, respectively, of the PRSPC, said the players and the sports promoter would be given a cash prize of Rs 25,000 each besides a citation. The names of this year’s award winners were finalised by a panel of selectors, appointed by the council, they informed. Giving details of the felicitation function, they said the council had decided to honour outstanding Punjab sports persons who have niched a place for themselves and brought laurels to the nation in tournaments held abroad and sports promoters who have made contributions in the promotion of sports in this region of the country. After scrutinising the long list of players and promoters, the panel picked up three names — Prabhjot Singh, Manjit Kaur and Jaswant Singh Kanwal, they added. Dr Kulwant Singh, general secretary of the council informed that the star attraction of the felicitation function would be the screening of video clippings and still photographs of important national and international sports events, such as Indian hockey team’s win in the 1975 World Cup, and memorable moments during the matches (different disciplines) played between India and Pakistan. Mr Bikar Singh Natt, Mr Devi Dyal, Mr Paramjit Singh Grewal, Sarpanch Tarlochan Singh Grewal, Mr Pawitter Singh Grewal and Mr Sharnjit Singh Thareekay were among others present during the press conference. |

5-wkt win for MC Club
Ludhiana, June 5 Deepak XI won the toss and elected to bat first. They started on a promising note with Sumit and Sonu giving them a solid base but the later order batsmen failed to maintain the tempo and their innings folded at 148 runs after 22.2 overs. For Municipal Corporation Club, Gaurav Marwaha and Rajesh Sharma were the pick of bowlers. They claimed three wickets each conceding 21 and 12 runs, respectively, while Deepak Kapoor took two for 22. Municipal Corporation Club made the required runs in the 23rd over after losing five wickets. The main contributors were Gaurav Marwaha ( 33
n.o), Salil Kaushal (28), Deepak Kapoor (22) and Sunil Sharma (21). The lone successful bowler for Deepak XI was Jai who captured two wickets for 25 runs. |
