Anti-tobacco awareness drive

Chandigarh, May 24
A week-long awareness and sensitisation programme being organised by the Department of Psychiatry, PGI, is beginning tomorrow. As part of the event, an awareness programme is being organised for class IV employees of the PGI and will be addressed by the Director, PGI, Dr S.K. Jindal.

School-going children will be given special attention by visiting schools and spreading awareness among them regarding harmful effects of tobacco.

The schedule for the schools is awareness lecture in Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector-16 (May 26), awareness lecture in Government High School, Sector 25, Chandigarh, sensitisation and awareness programme at Khajeri village in liaison with Servants of People Society, Lajpat Rai Bhavan, Sector 15, Chandigarh (May 27), awareness lecture in Government Model Secondary School, Sector 35 (May 28), awareness lecture in Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 15 (May 30).

Chandigarh win in under-19 cricket

Mohali, May 24
The Chandigarh district team won the match against Ludhiana on the basis of the first innings lead in the first match of the Punjab State Inter-District (U-19) Tournament for the Dhruv Pandove Trophy at Punjab Cricket Association grounds here today.

Resuming their innings from the 40 for 2 in 11 overs, Chandigarh achieved the target of 293 runs in 90 overs. Himanshu (85) and Harpreet Singh (56) were the main scorers for Chandigarh. Others, who batted well were Simrat Bawa (44), Abhishek (33 n.o.), Karan Sharma (25) and Karanveer (25 n.o.). Sanjay took two wickets for 40 runs for Ludhiana while Ratan, Gagandeep and Yogesh claimed one wicket each.

Earlier, batted first after winning the toss, Ludhiana scored 292 runs in 86 overs.

Brief scores: Ludhiana 292 all out in 86 overs (Tarun Passi 73, Chintan Sehgal 61, Yogesh Kumar 47, Gaurav Gambhir 6 for 21, Abhishek 2 for 35)

Chandigarh 293 runs in 90 overs ( Himanshu 85, Harpreet Singh 56, Simrat Bawa 44, Sanjay 2 for 40 and Yogesh 1 for 34).

Ashish topples Rajesh in Khattar memorial snooker

Ashish Bargodia today toppled Rajesh Jain in a straight sets 79-11 and 66-28 in the first round best-of-three snooker tie in the ongoing Fifth Saurabh Khattar Memorial Billiards and Snooker Championship at the Chandigarh Club here.

In the second match of the day it was a close contest between Karan Bir Singh and Mukesh Chopra in the first set. Mukesh easily pocketed the second set but lost the third set and the game went in favour of Karan Bir Singh. The score read as 50-35, 45-79, 62-45.

It was a day of upsets for the seeded players in the first round of the 150 points billiards game. Second seed Sandeep Chadha could not resist the challenge posed by Pankaj Gulati and lost the game at 135-155.

In the second match Vineet Khosla cruised past Abhay Sood with a score of 150-113.

Ball badminton coaching camp

Chandigarh, May 24
A 15-day ball badminton coaching camp for boys and girls will start tomorrow.
The boys and girls camps will be held at Manav Mangal School and Dev Samaj School at Sector 21 here, respectively. Eight players for each category, will be selected for the 25th Sub-Junior National Ball Badminton Championship to be held in Chandigarh from June 9 to 12. The camp will conclude on June 8.
