SC shoots down pleas on PUDA flats
Mohali, May 24 In the advertisement issued by PUDA for inviting applications the price was quoted at Rs 6.30 lakh but the allotment letters were issued at the price of Rs 7.44 lakh to 8.05 lakh, depending upon the floor or situation of the house. This enhancement of price was challenged by the allottees in the district forum, Chandigarh, interalia on the grounds that the price being charged was over and above the advertised price, material used was of low specifications and workmanship was of poor quality. They claimed a compensation of Rs 2 lakh plus Rs 25,000 for harassment in addition to the cost of litigation. The stand taken by PUDA in its reply was that the flats were allotted in 1998 where as the complaints have been filed in 2004, after a delay of five-six years and so were time barred. The change of any defect or deficiency in the material or workmanship was specifically denied by PUDA. As regards the price, it was stated that the initial price mentioned in the advertisement and the brochure issued by PUDA was only tentative in nature and it was not the final price. The final price was to be worked out after the completion of the flats, keeping in consideration the escalation in the costs of building material required for construction, labour charges and other matters. Though the district forum, and the state commission, Chandigarh, decided in favour of the complainants, the national commission in revisions filed by PUDA set aside the orders passed by the lower forums and dismissed the complaints. |

In Shayam Benegal’s ‘Subhash Chandra Bose’ she plays a role very close to her heart — Ila Bose, a niece of Subhash Chandra Bose. When she saw the picture of Ila Bose, she was surprised to find that she resembled a lot with her. She is full of praise for Shayam Benegal. In “Hum Hain Naa” she will give some fun-filled moments to us. In “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” she will play a mother. She is also foraying into the international arena with a film which has not yet been titled. Divya was here in the city for the lucky draw of Airtel Showdown contest. Play portrays womanhood in all its manifestations
The Chandigarh School of drama staged a Punjabi play “Aurat banaam Aurat bnaam Aurat” in association with the local Department of Public Relations and Cultural affairs at Tagore Theatre today. The play sculpted by the thespian Gursharan Singh, based on some true incidents offered an insight into the profound depth of “womanhood&” in all its manifestations and recovers an explosive truth that the idealistic exaltation of “goddess” bestowed on woman in Indian culture, in fact does not accord with the reality.
Gursharan had thematically interwoven four episodes which melt in to the next on the stage juxtaposing the dominance of male chauvinism pushing the woman grudgingly to a secondary status. As the play progresses under the direction of young Harish Verma and Mohinder Mohan the opening episode bares the ingenious motifs of rapists and the poor victim who had to bear the abuse and condemnation silently and without protest. Our society and the law, by and large, fails to protect the modesty, chastity and sanctity of the womanhood. In an endevour to make her realise the volcanic courage, she has been empowered with, Gursharan gave another healthy dimension to the story when rape victims chose to snatch justice by killing the rapist in the court itself. The perpetual torture of a demanding husband , merciless mother-in-law and the nagging sister-in-law for a dowry , weaved on a true story from Ram Darbar, with slight aberrations formed the next part. The powerful emotional narrative by leading artiste Amanpreet and Pallavi, kept the audience in rapt attention. Earlier, referring to the Indo-Pak relations and festivities the playwright has reminded both Punjabs in India and Pakistan where the subjugation of woman had been common as he supplements his claim from the atrocities committed on woman in incidents of Raja Bazar, Rawalpindi, and Hall Bazar, Amritsar, during Partition days. The concluding episode brought aliven the commercialisation of art, especially the cinema where the womanhood has to loose a lot to gain a little. Amanpreet, Aman Bhogal, Pallavi Uttam,Gaurav Sharma, Bikramjit, Ikkatar, Harish Verma, Ashish, Sukhwinder, Manju Shah, Gurdip Kaur played main roles. Parveen Jaggi and Sameer Thakur provide light and music effects, respectively. The play will be staged tomorrow at the Parchen Kala Kendra, Sector-71, Mohali, at 7 p.m. |
