NICD team visits hospitals
Chandigarh, May 15 A member of the three-member team, led by Dr P.K. Patnaik from NICD, while speaking to The Tribune from Delhi said, “The visit was meant to assess the kind of treatment being given to the positive and suspect cases of meningococcal meningitis in the city.’’ However, commenting on the assessment made about the spread of the infection in the city, the member said, “The treatment being given to such cases in the city is adequate.’’ Two clinical physicians were also a part of the team, which visited the PGI, General Hospital, Sector 16 and Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, here in the last two days. However, the city was not alone which was assessed by the visitors but they reported went to hospitals in Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab to collect the data about the exact number of cases of the disease that are coming in various hospitals. The health authorities in the region have already pressed the panic button after the contagious bacterial disease claimed 22 lives and infected more than 250 persons since last month in Delhi alone. Meanwhile, one more suspect case of meningococcal meningitis from Anandpur Sahib in Punjab was admitted to PGI today. The doctors, however, say that the preliminary reports indicate that the case might not be of meningitis. “The tests reports of this person would come out in a couple of days but the initial reports suggest that he is negative,’’ said Prof Rajesh Kumar, of community medicine department. The test reports of the other suspect cases earlier admitted at the PGI have also come out negative. |

Chandigarh, May 15 Prof A.K. Janmeja, Head of the Department of Respiratory Diseases and Tuberculosis, briefed the Home Secretary about the facilities being given to patients during the workshop. He also explained in detail the symptoms of asthma, treatment and medicine available for its cure and instructions to asthma patients. |

Skaters’ camp begins
Chandigarh, May 15 Mr Ravinder Talwar, principal of the hosts school, said all throughout the year they try to create sports environment and skating is one sport in which children love to take part. The camp is free of cost and open to children who may be students of any school. More than 50 boys and girls in various age groups now attend the camp held in the evening from 5 pm onwards Balwinder Johal is the coach incharge. Talwar added that school had provided floodlights also so that children could avail the facility in the late evening hours also. He said at present children can learn speed and roller hockey events. |

Chandigarh, May 15 The first tournament will begin in July named DAV Public School Open TT Tournament in Sector 8 from July 1 to 3, followed by the First Chandigarh Ranking TT Tournament by Bhavan Vidyalya School, Sector 27, from July 8 to 10. In August, Prof RS Mehta Memorial Open TT Tournament will be held from August 13 to 15, followed by the Second Chandigarh Ranking TT Tournament by New Public School, Sector 18, from September 23 to 25. In October, Manav Mangal Open TT Tournament will be conducted from October 8 to 10. |

In the men’s singles event, Amjad Khan ousted the Chandigarh ranked Tajinder Harry in the second round by 16-7, 13-12. Trials to select 25 probables for the under-16 football team will be held at football stadium, Sector 17, here, on May 18 at 4 p m. The team will participate in the third BKSP Cup (under-16) Football Tournament to be held in June at Dhaka. Players born on or after January 1, 1990, are eligible for the trials. Players must bring their age proof certificates. “The necessary permission from the All India Football Federation has already been taken”, said Mr Ravinder Talwar, president, Chandigarh Football Association. |
