Swimmers to represent city
Arvind Katyal

Chandigarh, May 7
Good news for city swimmers. The Swimming Federation of India (SFI) has decided to allow them to take part in various competitions from Chandigarh.

For the past many decades, the swimmers did not have any option but to either represent Punjab or Haryana. But now with a newly formed ad hoc committee, which will work under the aegis of the SFI, the swimmers will be allowed to participate directly in various national championships from the session 2005-2006.

Mr Virendra Nanavati, the Secretary-General of the SFI has nominated Mr S.M. Sharma, IPS and IG (Provisioning), Punjab police, to head the committee, which will conduct the selection trials and also look after other affairs related to swimming.

While confirming the decision, Mr S.M. Sharma said it was a good gesture on the part of the SFI to think for the welfare of the local swimmers. He said Mr Nanavati had deputed Mr Balraj Sharma, Vice-President, SFI, to coordinate and act as an observer for the committee.

Mr Sharma said the selection trials to select the Chandigarh team would be held in the last week of May for further participation in the sub-junior and Junior National Aquatic Championship to be held in Thiruvananthapuram from June 16 to 19 and in Kolkata from July 3 to 7 respectively.
