Lobbying on for unity in APHC
M. L. Kak

Jammu, May 4
Separatist leaders Shabir Ahmed Shah and Mohammad Yasin Malik had a discussion with Syed Ali Shah Geelani and APHC Chairman Molvi Umar Farooq for exploring the possibility of bringing about a reconciliation among them.

President of the Kashmir Bar Association Mian Abdul Qayoom also participated in the discussion. Mr Shah said today, “I am still hopeful of bringing the two faction close. But no proposal for forming a coordination committee has been debated with the two leaders yet.”

“We conveyed to the heads of the two factions that divided we fall and if we are unite we can claim to represent the people of Kashmir.”

He said the talks would continue and “it is premature on my part if I see that the possibilities of unification have brightened.”

While the efforts were on for bringing about unity, Mr Geelani has suggested, according to sources close to him, that first of all the reason for a split in the Hurriyat Conference needed to be found.

The sources said Mr Geelani was opposed to giving blanket powers to executive committee members. He had conveyed to mediators that the unity options could be explored if the rival faction accepted the amendment to the constitution adopted recently.

Under the amendment, all constituents of the conglomerate should have equal status. It may be difficult for the APHC leadership to accept this amendment for a reconciliation. The reason is that the faction led by Mr Geelani has nine executive committee members and the one headed by Molvi Umar farooq has four members.

This way the group owing allegiance to Mr Geelani would prove a decisive factor in framing and reframing Hurriyat policies.

Indications are that Mr Geelani has adopted tough postures vis-a-vis not only the unity process but as far as Pakistan President Musharraf’s stand on the Kashmir issue during his recent visit to Delhi.

The 75-year-old separatist leader does not see any reason for the jehadis to lay their guns. He has said, “Let first one million troops withdraw to the barracks and then a non-violent movement could replace the gun culture.”

Steps to revive tourism in J&K, says Mir
Tribune News Service

Srinagar, May 4
Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir today expressed hope for a “successful tourism” in the valley this year despite contrary attempts from the enemies of peace.

He was answering questions from mediapersons after flagging off a two-member team of the state at the Airtel One India Challenge car rally here this afternoon. Mr Mir and Bollywood actor Aditya Pancholi flagged off the car rally as part of the rally across the country. “Events like this also attract tourists from different parts of the country”, Mr Mir said.

Referring to the recent visit of the Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to Mumbai asking Bollywood to make Kashmir as its destination, the Tourism Minister said a “beginning has to be made somewhere”. “We are promoting tourism… persuasion and efforts are on”, he commented. This would continue to fully revive tourism in Kashmir.

Aditya Pancholi said, “I am not a producer, but an actor only. If I am given a chance to be here for shooting purposes, I would love that.”

He held that with an improvement in the relations between India and Pakistan, peace would be restored and tourism revived, that would also lead to the possibility of film industry making Kashmir as one of its destinations. “Somebody has to do the beginning…. I am ready to join”, he said.

Two amateur drivers from Jammu and Kashmir, Mr Kumail Ansari and Syed Owais Miraj, are competing with contestants from all other states.

The first of its kind car rally is a commemoration of Airtel cellular’s presence in all 23 telecom circles. Around 200 participants are competing for the total prize money of Rs 1 crore.

Third bus leaves for Muzaffarabad today

Srinagar, May 4
Amid unprecedented security arrangements, particularly after the escalation of violence since its inaugural run on April 7, the next ‘’Karvaan-e-Aman” with about 20 Muzaffarabad-bound passengers on board will roll out from here to the Kaman Post tomorrow.

The state government is leaving nothing to chance as far as the security of the passengers is concerned and has deliberately kept secret the place where they have been lodged and also from where the bus will start after four militant groups — Al Nasireen, Al Arifeen, Save Kashmir Movement and Farzandan-e-Millat — threatened to turn the peace vehicle into a “coffin”.

The militant outfits have repeatedly warned the passengers against boarding the bus. — UNI
