Wheat procurement picks up
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, April 20
Thanks to the better quality of grain, farmers are getting the right price for the wheat they are bringing to the mandis. The procurement of wheat is already in full swing. With over seven lakh tonnes of wheat already having been procured in the district so far, it is all set to cross the last year’s procurement figures. While last year the total wheat procurement recorded in the district by various agencies was 7,72, 855 tonnes, this year 7,16,414 tonnes of wheat has already been procured so far. The Union Food and Agriculture Minister, Mr Sharad Pawar is also expected to come and see the procurement process in a couple of grain markets including one at Khanna in the district on April 22.

Farm experts hoped that the procurement targets would be met in the district this year. An official pointed out, the procurement had almost touched last year’s figure while there were still several days left. The farmers were also getting the due price. The average procurement prices of the wheat per quintal remained Rs 640 today. At some places some private buyers were offering a rupee or two more to the farmers as the demand has also grown.

Sources revealed that all the wheat procured last year had already been distributed and there was no leftover from the previous year. With the result the godowns were empty. Moreover, the demand had also grown thus leading to the farmers getting better prices.

In Ludhiana district the average wheat production this year had been 18.9 quintal per acre against the average state yield of 16.9 quintal per acre. The apprehension that the wheat production might fall due to the early ripening because of abnormal heat during November and December are also proving to be false. Experts said, rain during February and March compensated for the previous two months which led a good production.

The experts maintained that the wheat production would be average only. However, it might cross the 150 lakh tonne mark this year in the state. The assessment is based on the separate surveys conducted by Punjab Agricultural University, the state Agricultural Department, the Central Agricultural Department and the State Remote Sensing Department recently. While the department of remote sensing collected the data through satellite, other three agencies have depended on the data collected through manual survey.

Low yield of wheat expected, says mandi board chief
Our Correspondent

Khanna, April 20
“Expected arrival of wheat in mandis of Punjab is 100 lakh tonnes which is 7 lakh tonnes less than the last year”, said Mr Sukhbinder Singh Sukhsarkaria, Chairman, Mandi Board Punjab, during a press conference organised at Market Committee office here recently.

Mr Sukhsarkaria warned the commission agents and the officials of the marketing board to weigh the crop genuinely. He said if it found such irregularity then the commission agent, the official of the government procurement agency or the secretary of the market committee concerned would be held responsible. Order in this regard would be issued on Tuesday from the board headquarters in Chandigarh, he added.

Mr Sukhsarkaria while expressing satisfaction over the procurement, said in all 145 mandis, 1,590 purchasing centres were working. All facilities like electricity, drinking water and tents had been provided to the farmers. He said the board had 17,235 km of link roads to repair and 10,000 km had already been repaired. The remaining would be repaired till June 30, he claimed. He said for the development of infrastructure in the mandis Rs 82 crore would be spent and Rs 30 crore had already been spent. He said all mandis of the state had been computerised.

He said the board had accepted long-pending demands of commission agents and traders as one license was enough now for one notified area and the renewal period had been extended to three years from one year. The traders doing trade up to Rs 1 lakh in a year were exempted from checking of accounts. Market fee from oilseed and pulses had been waived. Commission on cotton oil and pulses had been increased from 2 per cent to 2.5 per cent and plots on reserve price were being given to the traders in newly developed mandis.

On the demand to waive the R.D.F. and Market Committee fee on small flour mills, he said the government had already waived the fee on roller flour mills.

Earlier, he visited the grain market along with the Deputy General Manager, Mandi Board, Mr Shamsher Singh Randhawa, and DMO, Ludhiana, Mr Shakti Parshad.
