Voicing the pain of common man
Dr Sardar Anjum romances words in a manner that is most peculiar. Hardly ever does his pen wander into the valley of dreams; seldom is his expression laudatory. Ask the celebrated Padma Bhushan poet what it takes to be downright practical with verse, and he literally answers with a thud, “It takes a world of pain, and a lot of anger.” Pain and despair line the couplets of Sardar Anjum who is about to dedicate his 27th poetic work to the public. A compilation of his poems that have found prime newspaper space over the past year, the collection has been cautiously titled “Lakeerain”. It is meant for those who can read between the lines. Not that, Anjum leaves anybody’s imagination to chance. His word is direct, often full of sting. Also, his verse is not vague at any point of time. Visibly perturbed by the state of political affairs in the country, the poet shares the burden of the common masses, especially in this couplet where he says, “Dekh lena ek din unka lahoo mangege log; jinke haathon mein faqat ik reshmi talwar hai.” Another one that portrays his desperation is “Jo nahi apne unhe rehne do sukhe ghaat pepar; lao voh nadiyaan jo ghar ki sadiyaan dhoti rahen…” In his trademark fiery style, Anjum talked about his work today, sharing his apprehensions. “We have ceased to challenge authorities. But I want to ask the politicians by what credibility they rule us?” Famous for the heat of his verses, Anjum has again used them to target the powers that be. He feels particularly throttled by the political forces in Punjab where farms stand at the mercy of politicians. For such rulers he says, “Kheton ko paani do, apne AC band karo, Nahi to anhoni ko honi kar jayenge yeh khet…” In the 100 poems that form the body of “Lakeerain”, Anjum makes valid points. His themes are diverse and universal. In the end, the objective of his creative pursuit is “shaking the establishment”. For, Anjum, like many radical artistes, is anti establishment, and dares to question the prevailing norms, be they motivated by political compulsions or religious calculations. His poem on the Ayodhya issue makes a solid impact on an objective reader, so do his couplets on the renewed zeal with which India and Pakistan are walking the road to peace. On the Kashmir imbroglio he says, “Seher ke naam sulagti hui yeh raat karen; jo baat baat bana de chalo voh baat karen…” Interestingly, Anjum has dedicated the book to the common man of his country, and has ensured it makes a mockery of the so called representatives of people who have not even spared the Parliament its dignity. He writes, , “Jhagda karna kya bas yahi iraada hai, Main sansad hoon meri bhi maryada hai…; Ek duje ke nangepan pe behes karen, logon se kya yahi hamara vaada hai…” At war with those who have reduced politics to dirty power play, Anjum has further used his faculty to voice the woes of people. No wonder he sees himself not as a messiah of the poor but as their sounding board. Audacious to the core and unsparing, the poet says he places little trust in the present arrangements. “Kahaan ujale maangne jayeen, dono taraf andhera hai…idhar balayein udhar balayein dono taraf andhera hai…” But a firm believer as he is in the power of masses and of social change, Anjum swears by hope still, as he winds up saying “Dhuen ki lakeerein lahoo maangti hain…Kaho aandhiyon se diye na bujhayen…” Sardar Anjum’s poetic collection will be released at a special function to be held at Tagore Theatre on Friday at 6 pm.
