Laptops in PEC evoke mixed
feelings
Chandigarh, April 14 “Most of the students have a personal computer at home. It is very good decision if laptops are made compulsory in the college. These days it is very important to keep oneself updated with latest breakthroughs and research taking place in various engineering disciplines to be able to compete at the global level. It will also be very easy to make notes, said Gaurav Jindal, final year student of Information Technology. Harry, final year student of Metallurgy Department, echoed similar feelings. “But in this college there are students who do not have sound economic background. I am sure for many students it will not be possible to have a laptop. The college should come up with a solid solution for such students. At the same time if the proposal is implemented, it will increase the class attendance and will decrease the load of books”. However, Manu Jindal, second year student of Metallurgy says, “it is not an economical idea. It will put a financial burden on the students. If it is made compulsory for all students then it will create problems for first year students, many of whom are not computer-savvy and they will have to be strain hard to operate it.” Vijay Gupta, Director, PEC, said, “To make the proposal viable we will tie up with some companies. When we will buy laptops in bulk then we can surely expect 20 to 30 per cent discount. We have plenty of time to work upon it and there many other issue which need immediate attention”. Vivek Attray, Director, Technical Education, said since the fee of the college was very less as compared to other private engineering colleges, PEC students could afford it. |

Want to study European business,
alliance Francaise, Chandigarh, in collaboration with ESSCA, one of the French campuses offering courses in European business, is now recruiting students wanting to study abroad.
In Chandigarh to assess prospective candidates for ESSCA’s MSc course in European business, Mr Alian Ouvrieu, Director, International Development at the institution, said the idea was to build links with India. “Earlier we were only offering courses in French, but of late we have begun to instruct in English so as to have a wider appeal for our courses.” Last year ESSCA recruited about four students, pursuing French at Alliance Francaise here. Some of the aspects of the course are studies in contemporary Europe, European economics, international marketing in Europe, European Finance and international strategic management. With the Indian economy opening up to French companies, the demand for management professionals is slated to increase. It is this gap in demand and supply of trained manpower that Mr Ouvrieu and his peers at ESSCA seek to bridge. Mr Ouvrieu said, “Back home I look after student exchange programmes with Australia, Canada, North Africa and Asia. I also recruit degree seeking international students and help them go through the formalities. This year we are here to assess talent for our masters degree in European business.” Enquiries about the course being offered under the aegis of Edufrance can be made at Alliance Francaise, Sector 36.
