Parishad opens polyclinic, eye dept

Ludhiana, April 13
The Bharat Vikas Parishad (BVP) opened its Kahan Chand Aggarwal Polyclinic OPD and the Janki Das Eye Department on the premises of its existing Viklang Sahayta Punarvas Kendra in Rishi Nagar here on Monday.

Inaugurating the new facilities for patients, the national president of the parishad, Mr R.P. Sharma, said these centres would cater to the needs of patients by providing treatment free of cost in the fields of dental, eye, ENT, paediatrics, general medicine and gynaecology. The new clinics would also provide treatment in the systems of homoeopathy, ayurveda, acupressure and acupuncture, in addition to the modern system of medicine.

Prominent BJP leader and former member of the Rajya Sabha Lala Lajpat Rai laid the foundation stone of a hospital on this occasion, which would provide corrective surgical facilities to polio-afflicted patients. The former MP had also made available financial assistance of Rs 25 lakh from the MPLAD Fund during his tenure for the hospital.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Yash Pal Gupta, general secretary of the BVP, said the Viklang Sahayta Kendra being run by the parishad here had provided artificial limbs, tricycles and hearing aids to 21,182 disabled persons since 1996. Besides, more than 12,000 persons had benefited by way of rehabilitation and financial assistance for self-employment during this period. The body had also lent support during national calamities like earthquake in Gujarat, drought in Rajasthan and tsunami.

Prominent among those present on the occasion were Mr Pawan Aggarwal, Mr S.S. Jain, Mr Virendra Sabharwal, Mr Brij Bhushan Bansal, Mr Narinder Mittal, Mr I.V. Thamman, Mr Jitendra Parkash Gupta, Ms Neelam Gupta, Dr Lajpat Rai, Dr Kuldip Gupta and Ms Janak Trehan.

Importance of maternal, child health stressed

Ludhiana, April 13
The Directorate of Extension Education of Punjab Agricultural University, in collaboration with Indian Dietetic Association and the department of Food and Nutrition celebrated World Health Day in Ghal Kalan village in Moga district yesterday to focus on maternal and child health.

Dr Neelam Mahajan, coordinator, Home Science training programme highlighted the importance of health and balanced diet for all in the family, with special reference to sprouts and preparations of pulses and dietary requirement during diabetes and pregnancy. Dr Molly Joshi, Chief Dietician at the Christian Medical College and Hospital conducted dietary counselling for women. Dr Jaswinder Kaur Brar talked about diet during diabetes.

On this occasion, health check up were carried out by doctors of the Red Cross, Moga. Exhibition and demonstration was set up highlighting diet for diabetes, sprouting of pulses, preparations of sprouted pulses, clothing for mother and children and standard marks for purchase of food items.

Competitions on nutrition quiz and health check up were carried out for women. winners of prizes in nutrition quiz were: 1. Manjit Kaur wife of Mr Parwinder Singh , 2. Mandip Kaur, daughter of Mr Gurmit Singh, Health check up- I. Parmjit Kaur wife of Jasmair Singh, 2. Ravinder Kaur.

TPS Gurm, Dinesh Gogna win golf prizes

Ludhiana, April 13
TPS Gurm and Dinesh Gogna romped home victorious to win the ‘Best Gross’ and the ‘Best Net’ prizes in the Baisakhi Golf Cup Tournament organised at the Ranjitgarh Golf Course at the Punjab Police Academy, Phillaur near here today. This one-day tournament was sponsored by Kamaljit Singh Phollka in which more than 80 participants took part.

Nikku Grewal and Col D S Gurm finished runners up in the best gross and the best net competition, respectively. In the ‘Stable Fort’ section, Dr Neeraj Thapar proved his mettle while Santokh Singh followed him to be content with the second spot.

Mr Chander Shekhar, DGP, Punjab and Director Punjab Police Academy gave away prizes to the participants. He also took part in the competition and won the ‘Best Six Hold’ trophy.

Punjab cagers for camp

The following Punjab cagers have been selected for the coaching camp to prepare the teams (boys and girls) for the National Sub Junior Basketball Championship scheduled to be held at Bhilai from May 1 to 7, according to Mr Teja Singh Dhaliwal, honorary general secretary, Punjab Basketball Association.

The campers are (boys) — Ajaypal Singh, Bhagat Singh, Sukhjeet Singh, Sukhdeep Singh and Manpreet Singh of Mansa; Jaspinder Singh, Bikramjot Singh, Manjit Singh, Tejinder Singh and Maninder Singh of Bathinda; Chander and Gurdeep of Muktsar; Sanjeev, Jimmy Roy, Prabhjot and Nirmal Singh of Baba Lodhiana Academy, Ludhiana; Rajan Sharma of Moga; Vishal of Kapurthala, Sumit of Hoshiarpur and Ashu of Amritsar.

Girls — Amandeep, Shivangi, Chetna, Harpreet and Roshni of Gurdaspur; Nagma Mirza, Amandeep, Money and Suruchi of Ludhiana; Kawalpreet, Jasmeen and Jagroop of Amritsar; Rekha and Antarpreet Kaur of Kapurthala; Simranjot and Gultaj of Sangrur.
