Rs 18.68 crore released for non-govt colleges

Chandigarh, April 8
Punjab Chief Minister, Amarinder Singh has ordered the release of Rs 18.68 crore to Non-Government colleges of the state and constituted a committee headed by Deputy Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal and Finance Minister, Surinder Singla, Principal Secretary (Finance), K.R. Lakhanpal and Secretary (Higher Education) M.P. Singh to look into the demands of the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union (PCCTU) and send a report within a month.

The PCCTU had given a call for the boycott of examinations of April 2 as the Punjab government had failed to address its demands by March 31. This forced all three universities of the state to postpone the examinations.

Dr Jagwant Singh, general secretary PCCTU, welcomed orders of the Chief Minister on the release of Rs 18.68 crore and described the constitution of the committee as a step in the right direction. He appealed to Ms Bhattal to convene a meeting of the committee at the earliest to settle the issues of 50 per cent DA merger, absorption of the staff affected by shifting of plus two classes and issues which is already part of the notification regarding HRA for rural colleges, Ph D increments.

Pammi Bai regales audience

A colourful blend of Punjabi folk, pop and film music marked the musical extravaganza which reverberated the packed Dussehra ground at Mohali today. The show titled “Chakk De Phatte” organised by Balle Balle TV channel featured the top Hindi pop and Punjabi folk artistes simultaneously at a specially erected stage facilitating the live telecast of the show.

Chief executive officer of Balle Balle Upender Nayyer welcomed chief guest Rajinder Singh, Zonal IGP, who inaugurated the programme.

Amidst dazzling dances by BMP fire group, Joe Baath and Divay Jaitely took the centre stage as anchors.

Representing the pristine Punjabi folk, singer Pammi Bai gave a majestic start to the bonanza doling out hits like “Saaniu maan Punjabi hon da, Fauzi Border Te Dekh Dhamalan Paundre, Malvai giddha”. Pure Punjabi folk orchestra with many instruments was the highlight of his presentation.

Mohini Singh came with young dancers to present songs like, “ pardesia, dhoom, Bindas, Dill ki sardi and disco”.

Another tempting spell came from Anamika with hits like “Kala shah kala, Disco deevane, Kamaal ho gaya” among others, all choreographed by Joseph Dias.

However Richa Sharma regaled the audience with her private and film numbers like “Mahi ve”. Her voice wafted across the ambience approaching mid night.

Earlier Punjabi folk singer and actor Sarabjit Cheema with “Rangla Punjab, Mela Do gharian, Ishaqe da ho gya bukhar” and Kamal Heer with “kenthe waala puchhe tera naa,” Manmohan Waris with “Punjabi Virsa” and above all Mika with Dunaali and popular numbers won applause.

Choreographer dancer Nilofar Khan regaled the audience with dances “Ye raat, Dupatta, doom, Ishaq nahi kraida”.

Outfits coloured by nature

Each piece is an earth colour in the most gorgeous hue. An azure blue “kurta” with a spiffy indigo “dupatta”, cheerful pinks with lovely cerise patches, lemon yellow bandinis and sea green outfits with olive embroidery dazzle and impress.

Each outfit on display at an exhibition, “Coloured by Nature”, is reminiscent of the joyful colours that paint our world. The exhibition of ready-to-wear “salwar-kameez”, “kurtis”, capris, skirts and “kaftans” are comfortable, cool delights for the hot summer.

Each piece is made of hand block prints and organic dyes in Mangalgiri, Maheshwari and Cambric cotton.

The outlet, Sohni, is the craftsmanship of its designer Sohni Makkar who has been creating and designing for five years now. She has her own artisans, who work with her on the designs, dyes and prints for each outfit.

Sohni believes in natural fabrics in different cottons, weaves in natural dyes and block prints from all over the country.

“We use Bagh prints from Madhya Pradesh, Bagru, Daabu, Ajrakh from Rajasthan and Kalamkari blocks from Andhra Pradesh. These are now sourced and used by the artisans. Initially, I used to go myself and get these from all over,” says Sohni.

Her collection adds up to eclectic, traditional and wearable clothing for “the discerning customer who comes back time and again for what we do”.

Sai Baba’s ‘Palki Utsav’ on April 10

Panchkula: Devotees of Shirdi Sai Baba will hold a special procession to commemorate the auspicious occasion of Ram Navami on April 10. Called “Palki Utsav”, the event is organised every year to sing praises of Sai Baba who uplifted mankind with his divine interventions.

Procession will be led by a group of devotees who will sing Sai bhajans and dance in His honour. The programme will also feature special devotional offerings at the Sector 29 Sai Baba Temple.

Later on April 17, Ram Navami will be celebrated at the temple where 56 different foods will be offered to the Lord. TNS
