Bhandari is PCCTU chief

Doraha, April 1
Professor M.S. Bhandari was unanimously elected president of the Doraha unit of the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers’ Union yesterday.

Prof Lovleen Bains and Prof Gursharan Kaur, were secretary and finance secretary while Prof S.S. Virk was elected state delegate.

Prof Kuldip Singh, an executive committee member, discussed about demands of teachers. He also said recommendations of the Johl Committee are too under consideration.

Aulakh takes over as VC

Ludhiana, April 1
Dr Kirpal Singh Aulakh formally took over as the Vice-Chancellor of Punjab Agricultural University here for the second term beginning today. Before occupying the chair, Dr Aulakh prayed to the Almighty for giving him strength to perform his duties efficiently and take the university to new heights.

Later, addressing officials of the university, Dr Aulakh said he owed a great sense of gratitude to all. He said he was going to start a new chapter today and would try best to make the university achieve still higher goals. Dr Aulakh added that the second term as Vice-Chancellor was really a challenge for him and with the cooperation of his colleagues, he would be able to take the university to distinctive heights.

Bhulle Shah Award for Hans Raj Hans

The Bhulle Shah Foundation International has decided to confer the Bhulle Shah award on noted Punjabi singer Hans Raj Hans for his contribution to the field of Sufi singing.

Mr Gurcharan Singh, chairman, Bhulle Shah Foundation (Shingar group), in a press note issued here today, said at a meeting presided over by him, it was decided to bestow the honour on Hans Raj Hans for his contribution to enhancing the status of Punjabi singing.

He said a function to confer the award on Hans Raj Hans would be organised at the auditorium of the local Ramgarhia Girls College on April 5. The function would be presided over by noted Punjabi writer Surjit Pattar.

Baba Lodhiana Academy lads emerge champs

Ludhiana, April 1
The local Baba Lodhiana Academy recorded an impressive win over Jalandhar 76-50 to emerge champions in the boys’ section of the fourth Punjab Youth Basketball Championship which concluded at Gurdaspur yesterday. However, in the girls’ section, Jalandhar cagers prevailed over Ludhiana 57-47 to romp home victorious.

In the last super-league match (boys), Baba Lodhiana Academy players, thanks to some fine display of ball control and speed by Gurbhej, Gurpreet and Sukhbir Dhillon, got the better of Jalandhar. Gurbhej contributed 31 points, followed by Sukhbir Dhillon (16), Gurpreet (11). Other notable contributors were Gulveer Rana and Yadwinder Singh who scored 8 points each. For Jalandhar, Rinku (17) was the top scorer. Vatanpreet and Baldish made 12 and 11 points, respectively.

The players of the academy who reached here today were honoured by the Ludhiana District Basketball Association (PBA). Mr Teja Singh Dhaliwal, honorary secretary, PBA, Dr S. Subramanian, former Director, NIS, Patiala, and Mr Rajinder Sharma, Director of Everest Public Schools, along with other office-bearers of the association were present there to greet the boys.
