Need for closer scientist-farmer ties: Grewal
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, February 22
Mr Mohinder Singh Grewal, a progressive farmer and the newly appointed member of the Commission on Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP), Government of India, said today that there was a need for closer cooperation between scientists and farmers. He emphasised the need for mutual cooperation, saying that while the farmers learn a lot from scientists, the scientists can also get a lot of feedback from the farmers on certain unique methods adopted by them.

Speaking at a felicitation function organised by the Vegetable Science Club of the Department of Vegetable Crops, Punjab Agricultural University, here today, Mr Grewal said the scientists engaged in agricultural research should take serious note of the techniques developed by farmers while fine tuning their research programmes.

“Land to lab” should be the new approach, he observed. He cited a detailed account of how he shifted from the conventional agriculture to innovative techniques whereby he was able to substantially curtail farm production costs. He added that he maximised his profits by cultivating carrot, onion, garlic and other crops.

Dr Amrik Singh Sandhu, Director of Extension Education, PAU, appreciated the contributions of Mr Grewal. Dr A.S. Sidhu shared his observations on innovative vegetable seed production programmes of Mr Grewal.

Mr Grewal was honoured with a memento and a shawl on behalf of the club. Dr Jagtar Dhiman, who has written a biographic book on Mr Grewal, also highlighted the latter’s singular qualities.
