PGI admin ‘neglecting’ safai karamcharis
Chandigarh, February 19 Listening to the problems of the safai karamcharis during a meeting with the PGI’s officials, including the Director, Prof K.K. Talwar, and Medical Superintendent Prof A.K. Gupta today, Ms Chaudhary said it was unfortunate that PGI had neglected the problems of the sanitation workers and the contract system of employing the workers was also leading to corruption. Listing down the health hazards involved in the work of the sanitation, the workers said more should be done to ensure their safety. Director Prof Talwar mooted the idea of starting a separate vaccination card for the workers to monitor various diagnostic tests performed on them. In the meeting, the representatives of the safai karamcharis alleged that the wards of those workers who had died were not given recruitment and the PGI had not been filling up the vacant posts of the workers. While the Medical Superintendent supporting his argument said the committees had rejected a few such cases, Ms Chaudhary said under the Government of India rules the wards had to be given employment and the rules could not be flouted. The workers also raised the issue of providing them with uniforms and the Chairperson supported their demand. The workers also said their representative should be involved in various meetings of the institution for ensuring wider representation in the working of the PGI. The workers also demanded a separate office space, which the PGI officials agreed to. The DDA, PGI, Prof Sarla Gopalan and Dean, Prof Sudha Suri, were also present in the meeting. |
