PGI, Austrian varsity sign MoU

Chandigarh, February 18
A memorandum of understanding was signed between the PGI, Chandigarh, and the Medical University of Innsbruck, Austria, at New Delhi on Thursday.

Prof K.K. Talwar, Director, PGI, and Prof Hans Grunicke of the Medical University of Innsbruck signed the MoU in the presence of the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, and the President of Austria, Mr Heinez Fischer. The Union Health Minister, Dr A. Ramadoss, was also present on the occasion.

The institutions have agreed to foster mutual cooperation in the field of postgraduate education and research. Collaborative research would be undertaken in basic medical and clinical sciences and public health.

The MoU would also lead to increase in research opportunities for the staff and students through exchange programmes.

According to the Dean, PGI, Prof Sudha Suri, the collaborative effort was being discussed between the two institutions for the past one year.

Brothers corner glory in tennis meet

Chandigarh, February 18
Anmol Singh Ladhar and Fateh Singh Ladhar, both students of Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36, brought laurels to the city in the All-India Tennis Association (AITA) Tennis Meet that concluded at the National Tennis Academy, Gurgaon.

Anmol (15) finished runner-up. In the final, he gave tough time to Gagan Verma of Tamil Nadu before losing at 6-7(4),6-4. He improved his AITA ranking to 10 in the under-16 age group.

His younger brother, Fateh(11), gave a superb display in partnership with Shantanu Rajput of Delhi in the under-14 doubles final. They lost to Ritwik Shankara and Vedant Kapoor.

Earlier, in the AITA Talent Series Tournament held at Amritsar in January, both Anmol and Fateh had reached the finals of the under-14 and under 18 sections. They practise together at the Lake club, Sector 6, under the guidance of coach Sandeep Singh.

Academies formed

In an effort to give impetus to sports in Punjab, the Punjab Sports Department has decided to start academies in athletics, hockey and wrestling disciplines.

The players selected by these bodies will be provided all facilities by the department.

Surinder Singh Sodhi-(Olympian), H.S. Malhi and Mohanjit have been nominated in the hockey committee, while the wrestling committee will have Olympian Jagjit Singh, Sohan Singh and P.R. Sondhi.The athletics committee will comprise Olympian Bahadur Singh, Ram Avtar and M.S. Dhillon.

UT to give shield to best village

Chandigarh, February 18
The Chandigarh Administration has decided to give a shield for the best village amongst the 18 villages in the periphery.

The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Arun Kumar, said the trophy would be given every year on the eve of Republic Day. An appreciation letter on behalf of the UT Administrator and cash award of Rs 2 lakh would be given for the development of the selected village.

The selection of the village would be on the basis of sanitation, cleanliness, peaceful resolution of disputes, running of library, running of youth club, mahila mandal, promotion of sports activities, conservation of soil and water, afforestation, enrolment of schools, income generating activities, identification of talent, removal of encroachment and maintenance of panchayat property.

The DC said the members of the panchayat would be trained with special emphasis on preventive hygiene.
