PU joins hands with SCL on academic interaction Chandigarh, February 18 Prof K.N. Pathak, Vice-Chancellor, PU and Dr M.J. Zarabi, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, SCL, Mohali signed the MoU. The MoU, which is valid for the next three years, envisages academic interaction between the two institutions in the emerging areas of technology and in particular, organisation of M Tech. (in Microelectronics) (nanosciences and nanotechnology). According to this MoU, SCL will extend all possible facilities and will also make available experts to teach students and faculty of PU. SCL experts involved in teaching of these courses will have the status of visiting faculty members. The exact details of cooperation between the two institutions in the organisation of the M Tech courses will be decided on the basis of mutual discussions and agreement between the experts of respective organisations. Prof. S.C. Bedi, Director, University Centre of Instrumentation and Microelectronics, was also present on this occasion. |
SP meets school heads on security Mohali, February 18 The meeting was attended by heads or representatives of 28 schools who expressed concern about the safety of schoolchildren keeping in view cases of students being kidnapped in parts of Punjab. The SP told the gathering to get police verification of the school employees, including bus drivers, got done. He suggested that students should try to come in groups. An eye should be kept on activities going on around the school premises. |

Court Briefs Tribune News Service Panchkula, February 18 Jarnail Singh had shot at and killed a priest, Brij Mohan Shukla, at the farm house of a senior Punjab bureaucrat in village Mogi Nand on January 2, 2003. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000. SENTENCED: The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Mr L N Jindal, has sentenced three persons to five years’ imprisonment each after they were held guilty of being part of a fake currency racket. The accused — Pan Singh, Dharam Pal, Mangli and Ramesh Kumar, were arrested by the police on April 5, 1999, and fake currency notes of Rs 500 denomination were recovered from him. The court absolved Ramesh Kumar of the charges, and held the other three guilty. FOUR BOOKED: Acting on the directions of a local court, the police has booked four employees and another person on charges of embezzling funds from Panchkula Cooperative Bank. The president of the bank, Mr Shiv Kumar, had moved the court and alleged that cashier, Khushi Ram, accountant Vandana, her husband, Khushwinder Sharma, and clerks Neelam Sharma and Rajni had conspired to fudge with bank records and embezzle Rs 2 lakh. The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the police today registered two cases against the accused, EOW-in-charge, Mr Om Prakash, is investigating the matter. |
25 cases settled at Lok Adalat Chandigarh, February 18 As many as 25 cases were settled during the adalat. In two cases, cheques were handed over to the workers. The Lok Adalat was presided over by Mr Rajesh Kumar, Presiding Officer, Central Government Industrial Tribunal-1. Mr Manorajan Kumar, Director, Ministry of Labour and Employment, was the chief guest. 200 participants for Gladrags contest WITH a dream to touch the sky more than 200 aspiring models came to take part in the preliminary round of Gladrags Megamodel and Manhunt contest which was held in the city today. Of these, only seven were girls. Sanjay Sangwan, a student of Indian theatre, Panjab University, who is trying his luck in this contest for the third time, said he was quite hopeful that he would get selected this time”. And he has every reason to feel confident. He was chosen Mr Photogenic Face in a contest held in Delhi and he has also participated in Lakme contest and got the chance to be on the ramp along with John Abraham and Arjun Rampal. Another aspiring candidate Urvishi Chaudhary, a student of plus II in Dev Samaj College, said, “I want to become a model and I have the requisite confidence too. Moreover my parents are very supportive and I am sure that I can make it”. Maureen N. Wadia, Managing Editor, Gladrags, who wants to make sure that newcomers out to prove themselves do not lose way. Guiding aspiring models is the work she enjoys the most. Winning a beauty contest or making some waves is not enough. Referring to the short market life of item girls, she says they just disappear after doing one or two item songs. ‘Model bano aur bollywood chalo jaao’ is her guiding mantra. She says that many come here not to become model but to become a star. “There is very less money in modelling. I provide them a platform where they can get famous and get recognised and can move ahead. Dino Morea, Lara Dutta and John Abraham, to name a few are our products. This time a swim suit round has been added to the contest. The show will be televised on Sony. Other rounds will be held in other cities. A new attraction, Gladrags Swimsuit Calendar, has also been added. Yudishther Urs, better known as Yudi, a chatter box who has been entertaining audience for at least five years on Channel V will be hosting the Gladrags show. In city today, he talked to aspiring models. Yudi basically belongs to Banglore, believes in being happy and wants to explore life. At present he is hosting “Men maange more” on Star One. |
