He was also lucky in getting sponsors right from the beginning. He said it was in 1986 when he actually plunged into rally participation and in 1991, he got the international exposure of taking part in rallies.

There is endless list of superb achievements of Karamjit. In 1994, he bagged the third place in the Telecom Rally in Australia while driving Proton Wire 4WD. When asked about the FIA, which is an international body of rallyists, Karamjit a keen golfer, said the position holders of various world rally championships were honoured along with Formula I rallyists at a function at Monte Carlo every year.

He said unfortunately there was some rift in the national body governing car rally in India. This put participants from India at a disadvantage, he said. This happened with national rally champion Hari Singh, also of Chandigarh, who could not get much exposure in international rally championships.

He said there was enough talent in India and youngsters wanted to take part in various rally championship, but to be very frank, just five to 10 per cent would finally make it to national or international grade.

MC passes all agenda items
Our Correspondent

Mohali, February 17
All items on the agenda were unanimously passed at the General House meeting of the Municipal Council here today.

Apart from a number of development projects in different parts of the town, the agenda also contained items relating to council employees.

Mr N.K. Marwaha pointed out that PUDA had linked the lights in various parks to the streetlight points being run by the council. As such the lights in parks remained functional throughout the night, not only leading to a wastage of power, but also adding to the power bill that the civic body had to pay.

Mr Amrik Singh Mohali said a part of the parking area in Phase II was in a state of neglect. He demanded a premix carpet in the area at the earliest.

Mr Manjit Singh Sethi said a development project of his ward was not put on the agenda of the meeting although the municipal engineer had told him that the item had been approved by the officials concerned.

Mr Sham Bansal said the council had earned an additional income of Rs 3.32 crore from octroi by not giving the work on contract. He suggested that the additional revenue could be spent on the construction of the council office building coming up in Sector 68 here, instead of completing the building by taking loans on high rate of interest.

The president of the civic body, Mr Kulwant Singh, told Mr Bansal that the council would take loan only it became unavoidable. It would try to construct the office building out of its own resources, he said.
