Villagers protest against pollution by rice mill

Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, February 14
Following complaint of villagers of five villages near Mullanpur Dakha, District Magistrate, Anurag Verma today directed the Executive Engineer of Punjab Pollution Control Board, (PPCB), to take action against a rice treatment mill in Mandiani village.

He asked him to look into the complaint and initiate action against the mill. A deputation comprising residents of Mandiani, Pandori, Mor Karima, Mandiani, Talwandi Khurd and Talwandi Kalan had met the District Magistrate here today to apprise him of problems of air, noise and water pollution prevalent in these villages.

Led by Mr Charanjit Singh, former sarpanch of Mandiani village, the deputation demanded prompt solution to the problems.

The residents of all these five villages claimed that they were suffering due to a Rice Treatment Mill-Modi Solvex which was spreading air and water pollution in the city. The mill used rice husk as fuel, which released smoke and fly ash in the air. The dirty water mixed with chemicals was also discharged by boring deep into the earth. This water was getting mixed with underground water and polluting it.

Villagers said that the owner dumped the fly ash on the roadside of Ludhiana-Ferozepore Road. It was carried by winds and deposited in the houses in these villages. Besides giving out foul smell, it was causing respiratory diseases to villagers. The mill was earlier located in Barewal village. Following protests by residents there it was shifted from that place, they added.

They demanded that the mill should be shifted from the village as people are suffering from various respiratory and gastric diseases. The delegation later met the XEN, PPCB, Mr Gurnam Singh also. They claimed that he assured them of prompt action.

The villagers said that another major problem faced by them was of noise pollution caused by pressure horns of the mini buses that ply from Mullanpur to Jwaddi via Mandiani, Talwandi Khurd and Talwandi Kalan villages. The drivers start blowing the pressure horns the moment they take the phirni of the villages. The residents living alongside the phirni and other areas suffer from noise pollution as a mini bus passes through a village after every 15 minutes.

‘‘We want that the mill should be shifted from Mandiani village and mini buses drivers should be directed to remove pressure horns. ’’ they demanded.

Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, February 14
Putting up a strong case for the timely sowing of wheat, scientists at the Punjab Agricultural University, here said that the worst hit during the hail storm of January 27 was the early sown variety only. The scientists recently visited the hailstorm affected villages in Mukatsar and Ferozepore districts to survey the area where severe damage to wheat, sarson and barseem was reported after the hailstorm. The team visited the affected fields and held discussion with farmers of the Sohanawala, Fattanwala Badahl, Kalawali, Jawahwala, Ladhuka, Akalgarh and Galabwala villages.

The team said the damage to the early sown wheat crop that had reached the boot shape was maximum whereas late sown crop was relatively less damaged. The extent of damage varied between 20-90 per cent depending on the stage of crop and severity of hailstorm.

Sarson crop was still worst affected and it had almost been wiped out. Barseem crop was also damaged but it was likely to revive for the subsequent cuttings. The farmers were advised to sow summer moong crop from mid March onwards. The late sown wheat crop shall recover to an extent that would be economical to allow it to grow till maturity.

The farmers were advised to sow summer moong crop in totally damaged sarson fields. The sowing time of summer moong starts from mid March. The late sown wheat crop would recover to an extent that would be economical to allow it to grow till maturity.

However, the early sown wheat crop, that was in boot stage should be observed, for a fortnight to assess the extent of its recovery before making final decision whether to retain wheat crop or sow summer moong. The scientists from Faridkot might be asked to visit the
affected villages again after a fortnight to
reassess the condition of the early sown wheat crop and advise the farmers accordingly.

Hamara School
This school focuses on moral values and tradition

GREEN Land Senior Secondary Public School, Ludhiana, is a day boarding institution affiliated to the CBSE, and run by the Sant Kirpal Vidyak Mission (regd). The school was founded by Mr Rajesh Rudhra, who is at present the Chairman-cum-Director of the school. The school has a strength of 3100 students and 120 staff members headed by the Principal, Ms Baldeep Pandher.

The SKVM Trust has also set up an orphanage Sant Kirpal Humanity Centre near the school where orphans are taken care of. Their expenses are borne by the school management. Education, free of cost, is being given by the school to at least 100 poor and meritorious students.

The school provides not only quality education but also focuses on the all-around development of a student’s personality. The students stay in the school for a major part of the day. The teachers, therefore, have the task of creating an atmosphere of love, understanding, acceptance and appreciation so as to help children grow into trusting and loving beings.

Schooling at Green Land is fun as students do not have to carry heavy bags. Their home work done at school and finished by 5 pm. This also saves efforts and money of parents to get them tutors since the school totally bans the tuition system, what it feels is another name for corruption.

The school condemns the modern view of education which aims only at economic self-sufficiency thereby making a person a slave to greed and money, ignoring noble aspects of life. Therefore, more significance is attached to moral values and preservation of culture. This is done by celebrating all religious and national festivals on the school premises instead of declaring holidays every now and then. Confidence is bred in the children by giving them positive concepts, beliefs and values.

The school has proved its excellence in academics by giving outstanding results year after year. Sports are promoted by giving free education to promising sportspersons. The school has national-level players of table tennis, badminton and basketball. The school also provides a variety of co-curricular activities to tap the hidden talent of the students. The school has two computer labs (one exclusively for Kindergarten). Students, right from Nursery, are given computer education, where they go to the computer lab regularly.

The motto of the school “Be Good, Do good, Be One” sums up the moral and ethical values imparted in the school.

Principalspeak

Ms Baldeep Pandher
Ms Baldeep Pandher

THE young today are confused about their values and value system. They are facing moral conflicts and dilemmas and they are at a loss as to how to cope with these conflicts. Besides, these, there is a breakdown of traditional values due to lack of adequate role models, conflicting ideologies and double standards practised by people in position of power. Youth are impressionable. When they see their role models, such as parents/teachers cheating with pride or bragging about dishonesty, they can go astray. So teachers at school should be strong role models as children look up to them during their formative years. It is a great heritage to have honest parents and teachers.

To guide the youth, we have to cultivate an awareness about moral values and transforming these values of life. Value inculcation is a training to question, explore, clarify and understand our own values, beliefs attitudes and customs.

True education is training of both head and heart. Education that does not train the heart can be very dangerous. Therefore school must take up the responsibility to train the youngster to take a definite stand against the forces of degradation of our times. Indeed, the role of a teacher is of great responsibility. The teachers are builders of the nation. Therefore they must be trained at school to realise their responsibilities with distinction.

Parents and teacher’s who have high self esteem, breed confidence and high self esteem in their children by giving hem positive concepts, beliefs and values. The reverse is also true.

There is a short poem which brings home the point to parents and teachers that little eyes are watching them all the time:

“There are little eyes upon you

and they are watching night and day.

There are little ears that quickly

take in every word you say.

You’re the little fellow’s idol

You’re the wisest of the wise

in his little mind about you

In his little mind about you

No suspicions ever rise.

You are setting an example

everyday in all you do,

For the little boy who’s waiting

to grow up to be like you.”
