Exclusion of cricket from Asian, C’wealth Games irks enthusiasts
Chandigarh, February 14 Local sport experts have also expressed surprise at the latest decision of the Olympic Council of Asia. In a talk with local sport experts and lovers, it was felt that the lack of interest shown by cricket administrators has come as a hindrance for its inclusion in international medal games. Ashok Kochhar, an ardent cricket follower, said that at present cricket is the most popular sport of the country and its non inclusion in the Asian and Commonwealth Games send wrong signals that the sport is not popular among the masses. Mr Kochhar said though not more than 20 countries of the world play cricket, but to make it global, it should be part of the games. Kanwaljit Kaur, a sportswoman, said cricket, hockey, golf and tennis were the three most popular sports in India and already golf and tennis were part of the Asian games, then why cricket is being left out, she questioned. She said India can take the lead by forming a committee which could persuade the Olympic Council of Asia for including cricket in the next Asian Games. Vaneet Ahuja, a table tennis player said it would be better if cricket was also included in the Olympic Games. She said it was surprising why the cricket authorities had decided not to send their best team for the Asian Games or even the Commonwealth Games in 2010 if at all it was
included in these games. Rather, they have decided to send an under-19 team. Praveen Paul, a sports enthusiast, was of the view that excessive coverage given to cricket players have made them demi-gods. They only think of filling their own coffers rather than making an effort to make the game global. |
