Talent hunt contests at Govt Polytechnic

Ludhiana, February 11
Government Polytechnic for Women, Rishi Nagar, today organised a talent hunt competition here. Competitions in folk songs, solo daces, fancy dress, mono-acting, skit, choreography and giddha were held.

The winners will participate in the state-level youth festival to be held in Jalandhar on February 25 and 26.

The judges included Ms Reema, Ms Simmi Sekhon, Dr Sukhwant, Ms Lakhwinder, Ms Reema Sud, Ms Jyoti and Dr Kirpal.

Principal Ms Harvinder Kaur Toor appreciated the talent of students and encouraged them to be more active in academics and extra curricular events.

The results are:

Folk song : Madhu 1, Aman 2 and Kamini 3.

Solo dance: Saloni 1, Nisha 2 and Supriya 3.

Fancy dress: Lovely 1, Neha 2 and Monika 3.

Mono-acting: Harsharan 1 and Neha 2.

Socio-cultural interaction

The Department of Computer Science and Application, Ramgarhia Girls College, organised a socio-cultural interaction here yesterday. Mr Gary Faulkner, technical manager, Ontokumpu Copper, USA, was the guest of honour on the occasion.

Answering a query posed by a student regarding cultural differences between India and the western countries, he said, “People like people.” He said the teacher-student relationship was better in India than in western countries.

Digital film fest from February 14

Ludhiana, February 11
Seventy digital films will be screened at Dumra Auditorium in Dayanand Hospital for six days from February 14, excluding Saturdays and Sundays. This is for the first time that a film festival is being organised here.

The films have been procured through the British Council.

Mr Navin Talwar and Mr Dinesh Lakhanpal, who procured the films, said at a press conference that the film festival had been showcased in Chandigarh and after seeing the off-beat films they had requested the British Council to send the films to Ludhiana.

the films would be screened free of cost. The films have been divided into fiction, documentary and experimental films.

The repertoire has been sourced from India, Pakistan and Nepal. The films have been chosen for their innovative use of digital technology. Some films like "Bomb" are under two minutes .

Pathologists discuss new diagnostic techniques

"Breast cancer is emerging as a major public health problem. It is the most common cancer among women and accounts for one quarter of all cancers, making its screening of vital importance. Thanks to the mammography along with advances made in adjuvant chemo and hormonal therapy which immensely help to cure it an early stage and prevent it."

These observations were made by Dr Ashraf Khan, Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology at University of Massachusetts Medical School, USA.

He was delivering a lecture on 'Special Types of Invasive Ductal Carcinomas of the Breast' on the second day of the 10th International CME on Surgical Pathology and Cytology at the Department of Pathology of Dayanand Medical and Hospital (DMCH) here today.

The CME is being organised by the DMCH in collaboration with the Association of Indian Pathologists of North America and sponsored by the Indian College of Pathologists and Medical Council of India.

According to Dr Vineeta Malhotra, Professor and Head of the Department of Pathology, the aim behind conducting 3-day-long CME programme was to disseminate and update knowledge in a comprehensive manner which would be of practical value to pathologists, postgraduate students, practicing pathologists, research fellows and academicians.

The extensive interaction with global faculty in surgical pathology would enable the delegates to understand, evaluate and enhance their diagnostics skills, thereby improving patient management which was the final goal, she added.

The deliberations on the second day of the conference were full of educative lectures which were well received by the attending delegates. They also evinced a lot of interest in the scientific exhibition organised at the venue of the CME.

The scientific session for the day started with the lecture of Dr Vijay Joshi, Consultant in Pediatric Pathology at Hartford Hospital, Hartford (USA), who spoke on 'Neonatal and Infantile Cholestasis' (jaundice among children).

He shed light on the latest diagnostic techniques which helped to determine the causes and extent of jaundice in new born babies.

Dr Shivayogi Bhusnurmath, Professor of Pathology and Microbiology at St George's University School of Medicine, Grenada (West Indies), spoke on 'Lymphoma - Baby Steps' and provided a detailed overview of the new diagnostic techniques and classification of lymphomas for more defined treatment.

Dr Nirag Jhala from University of Alabama Medical Centre, Birmingham (USA) spoke on new methods to diagnose cancer of pancreas which was emerging as a major killer disease.

Dr Jagmohan Sidhu from New York (USA) delivered a lecture on haematopathology while Dr M. Bhattacharya presented a slide seminar on 'Neuropath Lesions'.

Manpreet Cheema is best athlete

Ludhiana, February 11
Manpreet Cheema, who had won four medals yesterday, added another medal to her kitty and was adjudged the best athlete in the 44th Annual Athletics Meet of the Khalsa College for Women here today. She enabled her team (quartet) to win the 4x100m relay.

Mr Surinder Singla, Minister for Finance and Planning, Punjab, gave away the prizes.

Dr Varinder Kaur Thind, Principal, read out the annual report.

Mr Singla announced a grant of Rs 5 lakh for the college.

The Minister, appreciating the achievements of the professionally educated girls in comparison with the boys, said with the spread of vocational education, the girls were performing excellently. The girls were marching ahead in many fields including education, health, sports etc.

Mr Singla congratulated the management for acquiring A+ rank in the gradation by the University Accreditation Committee and for the excellent achievements in the field of sports at National and International level.

Results: 200 m—Gagandeep Kaur 1, Ramanjeet Kaur 2 and Taranjit Kaur 3; obstacle race—Rupinder Kaur 1, Sukhpal Kaur 2 and Sushma 3.

Athletics meet begins at Arya College

The two-day 58th annual athletics meet of Arya College began today. Arjuna awardee (basketball) Sajjan Singh Cheema declared the meet open. Mr S. M. Sharma, Principal, spoke about the outstanding achievements of the former international cager who had brought laurels to the country.

Sajjan Singh asked students to raise the standard of sports by their commitment and dedication.
