BVM judokas dominate

Ludhiana, February 6
Judokas of Bhartiya Vidya Mandir dominated the Ludhiana District Judo Championship which concluded at Guru Nanak Sports Complex here today. Vaishali(below 35 kg), Meenu (below 48 kg, 50 kg and open category), Nidhi(below 44 kg) and Manjit Kaur(below 48 kg) proved won gold medals.

Results: Girls (u-14 years, below 35 kg): Viashali of BVM School 1, Raveena of Government School(Madhopuri) 2, Amandeep Kaur of Government School and Pooja Rani of Government School(Brahmpuri) 3;

Harvinder Alamgir wins Punjab Kesari title

Ludhiana, February 6
Braving chilly weather, a large number of ruralities turned out to witness the much awaited the wrestling bout for the title ‘Punjab Kesari’ held on the opening day of the 19th Annual Sports Festival at village Jarkhar, about 15 km from here yesterday.

The festival was declared open by sports promoter Mr Harjinder Singh Dhanoa, an NRI. The occasion was aptly summed up by Mr Dhanoa’s announcement of a cash grant of Rs 51,000 for the organising committee of this festival.

The main attraction of the opening day of this year’s edition was a bout between Rutam-e-Hind Harvinder Alamgir and Sher-e-Hind Sarwar Mohali. Both the wrestlers exhibited their skills which was cheered by the spectators. The bout lasted for 13 minutes and eventually, Harvinder Alamgir came out trimphant to lift the prestigeous title of Punjab Kesari.

Earlier, the games torch was brought from the famous Alamgir Akhara in a procession. More than 24 sportspersons, including present and former intenationals, carried the torch which was received at the gate of the stadium by Sikander Pehalwan who handed it over to wrestler Harvinder Alamgir who gave it flame to kabaddi star Channa Alamgir. Then the torch was passed over to international spiker Rajwinder Kaur who gave to young promising cager Jagdeep Singh. International athlete Manjit Kaur finally torched the flame, erected on a podium in the stadium.

In other events, (basketball), Fatehgarh Sahib defeated Muktsar 60-49; Gurdaspur beat Patiala 73-57 and in hockey (girls), Haryana beat Amritsar 7-1; in vollyeball, Fatehgarh Sahib beat Dailpur and Amargarh beat Bhutto.

On the second day of the festival, in hockey (girls), Dhaona XI beat Amritsar 4-0; Haryana XI blanked Layallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar 5-0. in the boy’s section, Namdahri XI beat Jalandhar XI 2-0; Signals Jalandhar beat Guru Gobind Singh Academy 3-0 to enter the last four stage.

In other events, volleyball smashing- Amargarh beat Phillaur 25-22, 25-21 and Fatehgarh Sahib beat Muktsar 25-19, 25-21; Ludhiana and Amritsar girls won their respective matches to set up the title clash.

In volleyball (shooting)- Gill beat Duail; Lehran beat Bhoremuna; in basketball- Patiala beat Kapurthala 58-54; Gurdaspur beat Ludhiana 92-80; Baba Lodhiana Academy beat Patiala 43-16; Kapurthala beat Nawanshahr 33-13; Jalandhar beat Hoshiarpur 51-32 and in kabaddi (62 kg) Dhad beat Baalewal.

BBF XI, Jai Bhawani XI begin with wins

The Bharat Box Factory XI and the Jai Bhawani XI made a winning start, registering comfortable victories in the 12th Veera Devi and 2nd Madan Lal Memorial Cricket Tournament being organised by the FTI Club at Bhambian Kalan ground here today. The BBF XI beat the Unique Club by 43 runs while the Jai Bhawani XI scored 6-wicket win over Ramgarhia XI.

In the inaugural match of the tournament, the BBF XI, batting first, were all out for 184 in the allotted 25 overs. The main scorers were Sachin and Ajay who contributed 49 and 43 runs respectively. Sachin’s essay was studded with eight hits to the fence while Ajay’s innings was inclusive of three sixes and as many fours. Chiton Sehgal made 26 runs and Varun made 15. For the Unique Club, Kuldeep and Surinder took three wickets each while Tarun grabbed two wickets.

In reply, the Unique Club was scuttled out for 141 runs in 21 overs. Mohit (24), Rinka (28) and Deepak (17) were the main scorers. Ashish and Shagun of the BBF XI claimed four wickets each, conceding 19 and 8 runs respectively.

The second match, played between the Ramgarhia Club and the Jai Bhawani XI was curtailed to a 16 overs each side because of poor visibilty. Batting first, the Ramgarhia Club made 109 runs. Ballu and Tinku scored 22 and 17 runs while for the Jai Bhawani XI, Vishal ( 4 for 11), Lally (2 for 18) and Bhuvnesh (1 for 22) were the main wicket takers.

The Jai Bhawani XI surpassed the Ramgarhia Club’s total after losing four wickets in 15 overs. Joga Singh hammered 52 off 28 balls while Anurag hit 31 and Deepjot smashed 20 off 15 deliveries. Sarabjit Lally and Billu of Ramgarhia Club took one and two wickets respectively.

MC XI wins by 94 runs

Ludhiana, February 6
A fine all round performance by Harmit Batra ( 46 not out and 4 for 20) and an equally useful batting by Anil Singla ( 86 not out) helped the MC XI to record an emphatic 94 runs win over the United Club at the ongoing cricket tournament at the Satish Chander Dhawan Government College for Boys here today.

MC XI skipper Sunil Sharma won the toss and decided to bat first. In the stipulated 25 overs, the MC XI scored a big total of 176 runs for four wickets. Opener Anil Singla remained unconquered on 86 runs. His innings included 12 boundaries. Anil and Harmit Batra added 132 runs for the fifth wicket. Harmit remained unbeaten on 46 runs. For the United Club, Narinder captured two wickets for 16 runs.

The United Club could muster only 82 runs in 17.4 overs. The only notable contributor was Narinder who chipped in 32 runs. For the MC XI, Harmit Batra (4 for 20) and Deepak Kapoor (3 for 21) bowled well to contain their rivals’ batsmen to a low total of 82 runs.
