UGC grant for food engg dept

Ludhiana, February 4
The Department of Processing and Food Engineering of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, has been sanctioned a special grant by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, and the University Grants Commission, New Delhi.

According to Dr B.S. Ghuman, Senior Research Engineer and Head, the grant of Rs 16 lakh has been received under the scheme, funds of improvement of science and technology infrastructure in universities and higher education institutes from the Department of Science and Technology to augment the postgraduate teaching and research of this department.

Another grant of Rs 12 lakh has been released by the University Grants Commission for conducting research studies on the evaluation of design parameters to optimise performance of hammer mills. The studies are expected to change the concept of flour milling in the state whereby hammer mills can be used safely and economically for flour milling.

Dr Ghuman further added that the name of the Department Processing and Agricultural Structure has been rechristened as Department of Processing and Food Engineering keeping in view the restricting of the academic curricula and research needs of the state.

Cultural fest showcases medicos’ talent

A three-day long colourful cultural festival, Ectopia 05, organised by the undergraduate medical students of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), here, entered its last phase today with students unfolding their creative abilities in fun filled singing, dance, rangoli and skit competitions.

Till this afternoon, batch 2003 maintained its lead with an all round excellent performance in various cultural activities. Batch 2001 was clinging to second spot as other batches were also facing a tough competition from each other to emerge among the top three.

In the duet song contest Rohit and Jagdeep of batch 2001 received the first prize; Surneet and Harleen of batch 2003 were tied with Harkeerat and Pahul of batch 2003 for the second place whereas Mukul and Mansumeet of batch 2002 shared the third prize with Harkiran and Ashwinder of batch 2004.

In choreography show Batch 2000 and 2003 shared the top spot for their presentations on the plight of tsunami victims and ‘motherland is calling back’ respectively. Batch 2001 bagged second position for portraying the negative impact of fake marriages scam of NRIs and batch 2002 got the third prize. In the mono- acting competition, Balreet (batch 2002) was declared first; Amandeep (batch 2002) and Mandeep (batch 2003) were adjudged second jointly as Nitish and Aditi, both from batch 2004 shared the third prize.

In rangoli contest Batch 2004 got the first prize followed by batch 2002 and batch 2001 at the second and third place respectively.

In ‘rang manch’, a skit competition, batch 2003 secured first position for comic presentation of illegal visa racket and batch 2001 bagged second prize for their skit ‘Pairan Thaley Bateraan’.

The first prize in solo song contest went to Harleen of batch 2003 in female category and Rohit of batch 2001 in the male category, Aiana of batch 2000 and Jagdeep of batch 2001 secured second prize and Aishwinder of batch 2004, Surneet, batch 2003 and Mansumeet of batch 2002 were declared third.

NCC to have more girls

The Additional Director General (B) National Cadet Corps, Maj-Gen Rakesh Dass, AVSM, SM, VSM, today said efforts were being made to increase the number of girl cadets in the NCC to 30 per cent of the total strength, besides providing powered gliders and latest weapons for training to the cadets.

The ADG said the performance of the NCC Punjab Directorate had improved this year, despite the problem of supply of funds from the state government. He said the directorate had come 3rd in Republic Day Function and overall 7th in the country.

He said this while talking to media persons after honouring Cadet Inayat Dhanda of 3 Punjab girls BN, NCC, and a student of Sacred Heart Convent School at the NCC group Headquarter Ludhiana officer’s mess.

He presented her a memento along with a cash award and congratulated her for being declared IInd Best Cadet (Junior Wing) in the Best Cadet competition at Republic Day camp-2005. Earlier she had stood first in the directorate combined annual training camp held at Nolikhro where she competed with cadets from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh.

CFC students bid adieu to seniors

The outgoing class XII of medical, non-medical and commerce streams of CFC Public School was given a farewell party on the premises of the CFC School auditorium on Thursday. The senior students participated in various contests.

The Principal of the school, Mrs Mary Koruth, and the Director, Dr Daniel Abraham, also spoke.

The results: Ms Raspreet Grover Miss CFC; Khushboo first runner up; Preetajeet second runner up.

Boys: Ashish Badhwa-Mr CFC; Sunny first runner up; Mayank second runner up.

Samiti honours BVM students

A prize of Rs 3,100 was announced for Himika Goel of Class X for standing 11th in the state whereas Jaskiran Kaur, Neha Bansal, Gaurav Jain, Deepika Malik, Rohini Gupta, Karan Rajput, Rohit Sahajpal, Neha Sharma, Mehak Sablok, Sachit Jain, Rarul Nagpal, Surbhi, Neha Kaushal, Sugandha Ralhan, Sherry Aggarwal, Anika Mallik, Pallavi Singla of Bhartiya Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar, were awarded merit certificates at a function organised by Sarvhitkari Shiksha Samiti (Punjab).

The samiti had organised a function recently to honour state-level merit Holders for the session 2003-2004.

New GCW Principal takes over

Ms Prabhjot Kaur, who had joined as the new Principal of Government College for Women here, says her aims is to stress on the overall development of her students. “Harmonious development of students would be my priority. They are the future of the nation, so they should be perfect in every field”, said Ms Prabhjot Kaur.

Talking to Ludhiana Tribune here, Ms Prabhjot said that she felt honoured to be the principal of the college from where she had done her graduation in 1968. Ms Prabhjot started as lecturer of English in 1974. Prior to joining here at GCW, she was Principal at Government College, Guru Teg Bahadur Garh, Rode, Moga district. She becomes the 13th Principal of GCW replacing Ms Kusum Ahuja, who had retired.

Ms Prabhjot said that students needed to be perfect in all three categories- academics, sports and extra-curricular activities.

Serve society, Turner tells students

“Ludhiana is the place where I was born and my heart is where my roots are,” said Ms Sukhi Turner, the first woman Mayor of Dunedin, New Zealand, while interacting with students of Gujranwala Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology here recently.

Laying emphasis on the need to serve the society, she said one should first stand on his feet and then work on things to make his society a better place to live.

Mr Darshan Arora, patron, Ludhiana Citizen Council, Mr Harmohinder Singh, joint secretary, Khalsa Education Council, Mr Kuldip Singh, director of the institute and Mr G.S. Dua, co-ordinator, GGNIMT, were also present.

Drive against drugs by NGO

The Yuva Shakti Trust, comprising students and non-students of various college, started a drug-awareness campaign at Shimlapuri in Ludhiana on Wednesday.
Navneet Chauhan, President and Naresh Sharma, General Secretary of the Trust and students of Guru Nanak National College, Doraha, said that the Trust had been constituted to save youth from drug menace.

Pamphelts on anti-drug awareness campaign, were distributed among the youngsters doing in menial jobs or those unemployed and prone to this disease Rohit Kumar, Harsimran Singh, Rohtash Sharma, Gaurav Jain, Ramparkash Pandey, Rajiv Rawat, Rajesh Kumar, Satyaparkash, Virender, Ravinder and Balwinder Participated in the campaign.

Lawyers give 2 lakh for tsunami victims

The city lawyers today donated Rs 2 lakh for victims of the tsunami disaster. A cheque for Rs 1.70 lakh was presented by the District Bar Association president, Mr Balwinder Kumar Goel, to the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Anurag Verma, at Mini Secretariat for the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund and drafts for Rs 30,000 was sent to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund.

The Deputy Commissioner lauded the role of the association for contributing towards the cause. He said different associations relating to trade, industry, and institutions were making liberal donations for the victims.

Till today the city has contributed about Rs 65 lakh to the Chief Minsiter’s Relief Fund.

Mr C.D. Gupta, retired District and Sessions Judge, contributed Rs 15,000. Mr Goel and Mr Subash Aggarwal contributed Rs 10,000 each. The vice- president, Mr Gurdip Singh Gill, and Mr Avinash Gupta gave Rs 5000 each, the association secretary, Mr Harjasdeep Singh Rana, Mr Vijay Verma, Mr Parupkar Singh Ghumman and Mr K.K. Bagai donated Rs 2000 each. The executive members also contributed Rs 1000 each.

Manipuri dancers enthral audience

Ludhiana, February 4
Doyen of Manipuri form of classical dance Raj Kumar Singhajit and his disciple and wife Charu Sija Mathur gave a mesmerising performance at the auditorium of Kamla Lohita Sanatan Dharam College here today. The function was organised by the Ludhiana chapter of SPIC-MACAY.

Talking to Ludhiana Tribune Raj Kumar Singhajit said the response of Ludhiana audience was overwhelming. The duo has displayed their talent worldwide. Charu Sija Mathur said in Manipuri dance, one movement always merged with another, giving a feeling of continuity. She said there were delicate movements on one side and jumps and turns on other. Manipuri dance was full of “sarvang abhnaya”.

Meanwhile, Mr Ranjodh Singh of the SPIC-MACAY, said the society would be organising about eight performances by different artistes in the city.

In February and March, famous artistes like Ustad Asif Ali Khan (Rudraveena), Dr N.Rajam (violin), Shrimati Prabha Atre and Shruti Sadolikar (classical vocal) would be performing.

Adopt alternative medicine systems: expert

Dr T. Kalra, a practising acupuncturist in Sydney for the past 25 years stressed the need to promote alternative systems of medicine, which were more affordable and more suited to a country like India.

Speaking at a seminar on ‘sports injuries and pain control’ at Dr D.N. Kotnis Health and Education Centre here today, he claimed that nearly 70 per cent of the patients in Australia were going for treatment of various diseases through traditional Chinese medicine (acupuncture).

More than 60 medical practitioners from all over the state attended the seminar which was presided over by Dr T.S. Cheema, former medical superintendent of Dr B.L. Kapoor Memorial Hospital.

Later at a workshop Dr Kalra examined and rendered advice to more than 250 patients.

College of Basic Sciences win lawn tennis tourney

Students of the College of Basic Sciences and Humanities (COBSH) won the overall championship at the Inter-Colleges Lawn Tennis Tournament of the Punjab Agricultural University concluded here on yesterday. In the final, they prevailed over the College of Agriculture (COA).

Results: COBSH beat COA 21 (Anuj lost to Sudeep Singh 4-6, 4-6; Amit Rajan beat Ravi Pal Singh 6-3, 6-4; Anuj and Amit beat Sudeep Singh and Ravi Pal Singh 6-2, 6-2).

The College of Agricultural Engineering (COAE) beat the College of Veterinary Sciences (COVS) 2-1 (Kuldeep lost to Amanpreet Basra 1-6, 2-6; Vishal beat Sandeep 6-0, 6-1; Kuldeep and Vishal beat Amanpreet and Sandeep 6-2, 6-2).

The COA beat COAE 2-1 (Gurdeep beat Mahesh 2-6, 6-4 and 7-5; Sudeep lost to Vishal 4-6, 6-3 and 4-6; Gurdeep and Sudeep Singh beat Mahesh and Vishal 6-0, 6-2).

The COBSH beat the COAE 2-1 (Amit Rajan beat Mahesh 4-6, 6-0 and 6-1; Anuj lost to Vishal 1-6, 6-2 and 7-5; Amit Rajan and Anuj beat Mahesh and Vishal 6-2 and 6-1).

The COA beat the COVS 2-0 ( Sudeep Singh beat Sandeep Singh 6-1, 6-2 and Gurdeep beat Parteek 6-1 and 6-1).

Sports festival at Jarkhar from today

The 19th annual sports festival and Mata Sahib Kaur Gold Cup Hockey Tournament at Jarkhar village begins on Saturday. The major attraction of this year’s edition will be wrestling. The bout for the Punjab Kesari title will be held between Harvinder Singh Alamgir and Sarvar Mohali on the opening day of this three-day festival.

Besides wrestling, competitions will be held in hockey, volleyball, basketball and kabaddi.

Mr Harjinder Singh Dhanoa, an NRI and sports promoter will inaugurate the festival on February 5.

Punjabi folk artistes - Debi Makhsuspuri, Indaerjit Nikku, Gill Hardeep, Harbhajan Maan and Manjeet Maan would entertain the spectators at the festival.

Ludhiana badminton from Feb 12

The Ludhiana District Sub-junior Badmintion Championship for boys and girls will be held at the Shastri Hall of the Guru Nanak Stadium here from February 12 to 15, according to Mr R. S. Behal, honorary general secretary, Ludhiana District Badminton Association.

The championship would be conducted in the age groups of under 16, under13 and under10 years in both singles and doubles events. The interested may contact Mr Gianinder Singh, senior sports officer (badminton) before February 11, Mr Behal said.

International Kabaddi Cup today

Khanna: The third International Kabaddi Cup is being organised on February 5 at A.S. College by the Nirmal Nimma International Kabaddi Club. According to Mr Kamaljit Singh Gill, organising secretary of the club, teams from America, Canada, German, England, Norway will participate in the competition.

Ms Harbans Kaur Dullo, Parliamentary Secretary, Punjab, will inaugurate the event while Shamsher Singh Dullo, ex-MP will distribute the prizes.

The first prize is of Rs 1 lakh and the second is of Rs 75,000.

MC challans 18 shopkeepers

A team of Municipal Corporation officials today challaned as many as 18 shopkeepers of meat-selling shops who were carrying out slaughtering operations in the open.

The team raided shops at Society Cinema Road, Arya School Road, Chawani Mohalla, Hukam Singh Road, Shiv Puri Road, Jalandhar Bypass and Kailash Cinema Road. TNS
