18 die in Jharkhand, Bihar poll violence
Ranchi/Patna, February 3
A low turnout was recorded in the Naxalite-affected areas of Jharkhand in the first phase of polling for 24 Assembly seats with the Naxalites exploding a landmine yesterday night in Malahi Tola area of Chhattarpur constituency in Palamu division, which killed seven persons, including six security personnel.

BJP seeks Kalam’s intervention in Goa
New Delhi, February 3
A day after the Manohar Parrikar Government was dismissed, a BJP delegation led by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and including 17 MLAs from Goa today met President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and demanded the immediate reinstatement of the party’s government in Goa and recall of Governor S C Jamir for his “unconstitutional and partisan” action.

Explain EPF interest hike: EC tells govt
New Delhi, February 3
Virtually questioning the government’s decision to pay a higher interest rate of 9.5 per cent to 40 million subscribers of the Employees Provident Fund, a day ahead of the Assembly elections in Bihar, Jharkhand and Haryana, the Election Commission today said it had already sought an explanation on the issue.
