Disturbed sleep can be dangerous, say docs
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, January 23
Severe neurological and respiratory disorders may be affecting your life due to increasing stress, disturbed sleep cycle and ignorance about identifying the common symptoms.

Doctors across the city say about 5 to 7 per cent of city residents are suffering from obstructive sleep apnea. But the awareness levels are almost nil among commoners. According to Dr U.P. Singh of the Prime Diagnostic Centre, a sleep lab was recently set up at the center to conduct study on patients suffering it. This leads to the obstruction of the respiratory track which in turn lowers the oxygen level in the body. On an average, we are dealing with 8 to 10 such cases every month, he adds.

Snoring, choking, increased neck area and feeling extremely tired and drowsy during the day are the symptoms patients suffering from it should watch out for. The disorder often leads to a high incidence of hypertension and cardiovascular diseases.

“A person suffering from this disorder can even die in sleep. The incidence of hypertension and cardiovascular diseases too are high among such patients. But apart from taking clues for routine symptoms, patients do not even know that they are deprived of normal eight hour sleep” says Dr D. Behera, Department of Pulmonary Medicine, PGI, where a partial lab has been set up for diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea.

The fast pace of life, with long working hours, late night parties, stress and depression are the triggering factors for several neurological sleep disorders.

“There is a misconception that sleeping hours, which are lost by sleeping late one night can be made up by sleeping till late next morning. In reality, when the sleep cycle is disturbed even once, the disturbance lingers on for days together,” says Dr Dheeraj Khurana, Assistant Professor, Neurology, PGI.

Doctors also say that several cases of insomnia develop into psychotic disorders. The PGI in fact is going to become the first hospital in the region to set up a sleep Lab where patients suffering from such disorders can be closely monitored for proper diagnosis.

2 YPS students to represent Punjab in skiing meet
Tribune News Service

Mohali, January 23
For Arshbir (13) and Abhayjit (11), skiing on the snow-capped mountains is not just something to be watched on TV. The two brothers, both students of Yadvindra Public School here, will represent Punjab at the National Junior and Sub-junior Skiing Championship to be held in Manali in February.

Both A grade skiiers of the Directorate of Mountaineering and Allied Sports, Manali, Arshbir and Abhayjit are also the only ones from Punjab who are seriously into this adventure sport. “Not many people even know that there is an international-class academy at the directorate in Manali that trains people in the sport,” said Dr K.S. Dhillon, the boys’ father.

The two were trained in the basic course at the directorate last year. “We both got A grade and the trainer encouraged us to participate in the national championship,” said Arshbir who is a Class VIII student at the YPS.

“The reason that the two can be trained during the winter months at Manali is because they are in the YPS. The session ends by the time the course starts and the school was kind enough to allow the children to miss school and attend the camp,” pointed out the boys’ mother, Dr Sumeet Dhillon.

And it is not the boys alone who have entered the wonderful world of adventure sports and are now completely hooked. “I, too, did the basic course and, believe me, it was a thrilling experience though I could only manage a C grade,” said Sumeet.

And for the father, Manali is probably one of the most beautiful places to be in during the winters. “All you need is to be warmly dressed, “he said, adding that the Manali academy was government-run and offered these courses at highly subsidised fee.

But for the two boys, it is the competition that they are looking forward to. “The event is called Slalom. We will be provided with all the necessary equipment there. The skiis and sticks etc. We will ski through poles from one gate at the top of the hill to the one at the bottom. The winner will be one who takes the least amount of time to do so. We will try to win the event though it is not going to be easy since students from Himachal and J&K are far better trained than us. But we will give it our best shot,” said Arshbir.

And how did the two get into skiing? “I was good at roller skating and later I started board skating. I could do both well. Skiing was my idea since I was enchanted by the snow. Once I started skiing, Abhay followed naturally,” said Arshbir.

MC to have fewer committees
Sanjeev Singh Bariana
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, January 23
The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh is all set to have fewer number of committees in the future. A proposal in this regard was moved by the Mayor recently.

Things had come to a halt over the functioning of various committees because of a controversy over their number. The corporation had 13 committees. Since the city had no house tax, the committee was done away with earlier. The Commissioner had sought a clarification from the administration as to how many committees could be constituted by the corporation.

It is a known fact that the constitution provides for only four committees — the Finance and Contract, Roads, Water Supply and House Tax.

The trouble started when Ms Kamlesh, a former Mayor, constituted a budget review committee in November, 2004. She had asked for details of all financial records covered under the plan and the non-plan heads. “This led to the Commissioner raising question over the validity of more than a dozen committees whereas the calender provided only for four”, sources said.

The sources said in a latest communication to the Home Secretary it had been proposed that the number of committees be reduced to eight, Roads, Water Supply and Sewerage, City Beautiful, House Tax, Apni Mandi, Sanitation and Fire. The Art and Culture committee is proposed to be merged with Roads. Slums is proposed to be merged with Water Supply and Sewerage Committee.

The communication is learnt to have been forwarded by the Mayor to the Home Secretary following talks with senior officials in the administration.

The Enforcement and the Resource Generation Committees are proposed to be done away with. It was felt that the Resource Generation Committee had no real powers in the actual practice so it was wise to do away with it.

The calender provides for the Finance and Contract Committee, Roads, Water Supply and House Tax Committees only. It is, however, felt that the role of the corporation needed greater decentralisation for better results so powers needed to be augmented between different committees for greater deliberations before any decision.

“The House Tax Committee is a new addition and is interesting because till now we don’t have any house tax charges in the city. One could, however, link it to the property tax which was imposed recently in the city. The corporation is likely to have the committees by the first week of February”, a Congress councillor said.
