Posts of lecturer in aided colleges lying vacant
Shivani Bhakoo

Ludhiana, January 13
Dozens of posts of lecturer in private aided colleges in the district are lying vacant. Thanks to the callous attitude of the state government that has suddenly stopped sending experts for recruitment of college teachers. The college authorities said for the past one month or so, the government had stopped sending their experts and they were not even told as to why the new appointments were being withheld. The authorities said because of this, the students were deprived of getting quality teachers in the colleges.

Mr Tarsem Bahia, former Principal of A.S. College Khanna, and convener of the Punjab Educationists Forum, said the government aided private colleges were suffering at the hands of state government. “This year, rate of retirement is highest. Recruitments are to be made if one gets retired. Posts of hundreds of lecturers are lying vacant throughout Punjab and dozens in the district, which needed to be filled immediately.

“But governments’ attitude to withhold fresh recruitments has created panic in these colleges. The academic session has been blocked and students are suffering due of lack of teachers”, said Mr Bahia. Mr Bahia further alleged that the government was taking the plea that the new appointments were being withheld to rationalise the staff strength in colleges. “The colleges did not receive any orders regarding rationalisation of staff by the government.

“If there was such a move, the concerned colleges should have been intimated”, said Mr Bahia. He also alleged that the government had taken this step to save money. Meanwhile, Mr Gagandeep Brar, Joint Secretary, Education, Chandigarh, when contacted, said the government had not imposed any ban on the recruitment of college teachers. We just wanted to rationalise the staff strength, he added. “We are also in a hurry to appoint new teachers to fill the vacancies and very soon new appointments will be made”, he said.

Eye donation movement picks up

Ludhiana, January 13
Despite earlier hurdles, superstitions and misconceptions, associated with donation of eyes, there is more awareness and the eye donation movement is picking up, albeit slowly, in Punjab. The Punarjot Eye Bank of Punjab, virtually a pioneer in eye banking in the region since 1992, had successfully restored eye sight to 66 corneal blind persons in 2001 and the number of corneal transplants continued to go up steadily in the following year with 126 in 2002, 156 in 2003 and 161 in 2004.

The moving force behind the eye bank and the drive to promote eye donations, Dr Ramesh observed that of a total 1.5 crore blind in the country, around 30 lakh were corneal blind, majority of them being children under the age of 10. The corneal blind persons stood a chance for restoration of sight only if more and more people came forward to donate their eyes after death. “One must keep in mind that eye donation by one persons can restore sight of two corneal blind persons as each gets one good eye.” OC
