Three-pronged strategy to speed up peace process: GOC

Jammu, January 10
Maintaining that peace was fast returning to Jammu and Kashmir, a top Army commander said the three-pronged strategy being adopted by the Army as regards militancy problem would speed up the restoration of normalcy in the state.

“Peace is fast returning to the state. Our three-pronged strategy aimed at killing top terrorist commanders, stoppage of cross-border infiltration and pro-people development programmes will accelerate return of peace and normalcy in the state,” General Officer Commanding (GOC), 16 Corps, Lieut-Gen Sudhir Sharma said at Nagrota last evening.

“Militant outfits are feeling demoralised, people have begun coming out of fear of gun and development is gaining speed,” he said.

He said the Army had earlier devised a three-pronged strategy to deal with militancy in Jammu and Kashmir.

“Under this, the Army pinpoints top commanders of militant outfits, mercenaries and notorious militants and eliminates them,” he said.

Around 90 top militant commanders were killed in 2004, he said.

“On the other hand, we ensure that no cross-border infiltration takes places along the Line of Control after fencing was complete in October last,” he said. “We want to achieve zero infiltration”, he said.

“Besides, under this strategy, we try to heal wounds inflicted by militants on the people and undertake development programmes in hilly, remote and rural areas for economic uplift under the Operation Sadbhavana,” he said.

He said the Army had almost performed its role in the state and political initiative was the need of the hour now. — PTI
