‘AIDS control mission’ launched Chandigarh, January 10 Assuring full backup support by the Chandigarh administration to the Mission, General Rodrigues announced that Prof K.K.
Talwar, Director, PGI, would lead the Mission. Addressing the delegates after inaugurating the Indo-US symposium, on “Recent Advances in AIDS Research” organised at PGI here today, General Rodrigues said the magnitude of this grave problem can be gauged from the fact that there are 3.94 crore people infected with HIV, out of which 22 lakh are children. During 2004, 49 lakh people got infected which included 6.40 lakh children. The general said the Chandigarh centre required concerted efforts in a more systematic and pragmatic way. He also remarked that special emphasis should be laid on saving the women and children and also called upon the need to set up homes for women who are at risk of contracting the disease. During the technical sessions, Dr Barry Kriestwirth from New Jersey, USA, described how the molecular tools could be used to determine the prevalence of tuberculosis (TB). According to him, in a country like India, where more than 60 per cent of the HIV positive persons suffer from TB, more effective molecular based diagnostic tests should be evolved. “A lot of time is taken to correctly diagnose TB by taking the sputum samples as the bacteria are grown to detect the disease. The entire process takes three to four weeks. The right approach in developing countries should be to shift to culture-based tests where the results are foolproof and quicker,’’ said Dr
Kriestwirth. Dr H. Sandhu from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) spoke on the collaborations between Indian scientists and those overseas. Prof Fredrick Valentine from the New York University (NYU) School of Medicine discussed the issues related to cellular immunity and explained how these could be harnessed to control HIV Infection. Prof Susan Zolla-Pazner also from NYU spoke on how the antibodies could be used to control the virus and highlighted possible application of the antibodies in managing the patients. Dr Akhil Banerjee from the National Institute of Immunology
(NII) presented his work in the area of genetic characteristics of the HIV infected persons in India. A separate section was devoted to co-occurrence of TB and HIV where Dr N. K. Mehra from All India Institute of Medical Sciences
(AIIMS), New Delhi, described several genetic factors, which were common to both the diseases. Dr Suman Laal of NYU discussed the diagnostic tests for early detection of TB among the HIV patients. |

Kurali teams in football final Chandigarh, January 10 Sanjay Football Academy, Sector 44, and Mehar Football Academy of Kurali were tied after the league matches with one win and one draw each. However, Mehar FA moved into the title-round on the basis of better goal average from Pool B. Sanjay Football Academy had scored three goals and conceded one in the two league matches. Mehar Academy, who had played a one-all draw with Sanjay Academy, had done their mathematic calculations well before the match. Needing victory at least by a three-goal margin, Mehar Academy pumped in six goals against one by Jesus Saviour School of Sirhind to take their place in the final. In two league matches, they had scored eight goals and conceded two. The star performer for Mehar Football Academy was Ravinder Singh who repeatedly pierced the Jesus Saviour School defence and scored five goals, including a hat-trick in the 13th, 20th, 27th, 63rd and 69th minutes. Rohit had scored the second goal for the winners in the 17th minute. The face-saving goal for Jesus Saviour School was scored by Vikramjit Singh. Ravinder Singh was declared the man of the match. However, the biggest upset of the tournament was registered in Pool A as DAV Senior Secondary, Kurali, pipped strong contenders and local favourites Chandigarh Football Academy which is run by Chandigarh Administration, by 1-0. In a closely contested league match, Kurali boys snatched the match-winner in the 67th minute through Sanjeev Kumar. The CFA boys enjoyed the territorial supremacy and displayed better moves. Despite keeping possession of the ball for a better period, they failed to encash the opportunities that came their way. Gagan of Chandigarh Football Academy was given the man of the match award. CFA had defeated DAV Football Club by 5-2 in their earlier pool fixture. Today’s defeat forced them out of contention.
