Unregulated X-ray units invite experts’ ire
Chandigarh, January 9 “The problem is that the X-ray units are commercialised in the country and there is no regulation of the ownership of machines. Anyone who can afford to buy an X-ray machine, worth a few lakhs of rupees, can install it and start an X-ray unit,” said Dr Arun Chougule, Associate Professor at SMS Medical College and Hospital, Jaipur, while talking to The Tribune on the sidelines of the National Conference on Radiology at the GMCH, Sector 32, today. In a survey conducted by him at 193 X-ray installations in Rajasthan, 80 per cent of the units did not have the specified floor area of 80 sq feet with a 9 inch thick wall separating the area from the remaining space. A similar number of units did not have the basic requirement of a qualified doctor. A trained radiologist, the primary requirement of any radio-diagnosis centre, was employed by only 33 per cent of the centres surveyed. “Throughout the country, the findings have been similar as the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) is only able to monitor the government set-ups, leaving out the private ones,” said Dr Chougule. Dr R.K. Munjal from the Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute, New Delhi, stressing upon the point raised by Dr Chougule said there were around 75,000 X-ray machines in the country but qualified manpower to operate these machines was the biggest problem. “The problem is both on account of lack of training centres for radiologists and unwillingness of the owners to employ qualified people,” said Dr Munjal. “The Supreme Court had directed the state governments to take steps in this regard after a public interest litigation was filed in the court a few years ago. We expect that a final decision would be taken soon,” added Dr
Chougule. |
