Lecture on TB organised

Ludhiana, January 2
NSS girls unit of SCD Government College here organised a lecture on tuberculosis. Dr Pradeep Kapoor, Head of Chest Department, Oswal Cancer Hospital, delivered the lecture. Prof Balwinder Kaur welcomed Dr Kapoor. Dr Kapoor said if a patient had cough for more than three weeks then he/she should be diagnosed for TB. He said not only the disease was prevalent in poor people but was also detected among people from other sections of society.

He discussed in detail the steps to prevent the disease. He said those who were being treated under the DOTs programme should not leave the course midway. Serious stages of TB could be prevented by immunisation through BCG vaccine.

TB is curable if the six-month treatment is taken regularly, he added.

Free heart camp organised

Ludhiana, January 2
More than 720 patients were examined at a free heart and medical check-up camp organised at Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha, Model Town Extension, here today. Inaugurating the camp, former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal lauded the efforts being made by religious and voluntary bodies to alleviate people’s sufferings. He also made a special mention of Mr Avtar Singh Makkar, president of the gurudwara managing committee and a member of the SGPC, for organising the camp.

Mr Badal also honoured the doctors and other supporting staff at the camp.

The medical and cardiac camp, organised to mark the birthday of Guru Gobind Singh, was supervised by Dr M.P.S. Sidana and Dr Inderpal Singh. A team of doctors, including Dr Gurpreet Singh Wander, chief cardiologist, Hero DMC Heart Institute, Dr Baldev Singh Aulakh, urologist and transplant surgeon, Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, Dr Anurag Goswami, Dr Neelam Sodhi, Dr Suruchi Goswami, Dr Prem Singh Chawla, Dr Jagroop Singh Bath, Dr Kulwinder Saini, Dr G.S. Chawla, Dr R.S. Nanda, Dr S.S. Randhawa and Dr R.S. Sodhi examined the patients.

The patients were also given free medicines. A large number of patients got their glucose level, ECG, lab tests, ultrasound scans and x-rays done during the camp.

Balkrishan’s death mourned

The members of governing council, staff and students of G.H.G. Khalsa College, Gurusar Sadhar, expressed their deep sorrow and grief over the demise of Balkrishan Singh, the doyen of Indian hockey, who passed away on December 31. A condolence meeting was held yesterday at the college campus on Saturday and two- minute silence was observed in the memory of the departed soul.

A resolution was passed during the meeting to condole the death of hockey legend. “Balkrishan Singh was the only player in the country to have won gold medal at Olympics, both as a player and as a coach. He was a member of the gold medal winning team in the 1956 Olympics and was the chief coach of the Indian team, which last time won gold in 1980 Olympics in Moscow”, the resolution read.

Balkrishan was invited to Australia in 1965 to train the Australian hockey team. Olympian Balkrishan, Arjuna awardee, was not only a great hockey player but also an accomplished athlete, a keen golfer and the finest hockey coach ever produced by India.

In 1949, he set a new record in triple jump event of Panjab University and All-India Inter-varsity Athletics Championship in Bangalore.

After retiring from active hockey, he joined NIS, Patiala, and in 1992 took up his last assignment as the national coach of the Indian hockey team in Barcelona Olympic games. He was the pioneer to introduce the concept of ‘Total Hockey’.

A majority of the NIS trained hockey coaches, working in the country, have been his students.

Balkrishan Singh was closely associated with GHG Khalsa Colleges, Gurusar Sadhar, and had contributed immensely, particularly in the field of sports.

Present on the occasion was a galaxy of veteran athletes and sports persons, including Col Jaswant Singh and Mr Avtar Singh Ghuman, hockey olympians, Principal Manjit Singh Khattra and Principal Sarwan Singh Dhudike, educationists and sports promoters, Prof Bawa Singh, former Vice-Chairman, National Commission for Minorities and Mr Hardial Singh Gill, Vice-President, Governing Council, GHG Khalsa Colleges, Gurusar Sadhar.
