Mohali hospital cries for power hotline link
Kulwinder Sangha

Mohali, December 21
While patients at the Civil Hospital here suffer due to the lack of a regular supply of power, red tape is holding up the installation of a hotline connection to the hospital.

The hospital is facing frequent power cuts leading to disruption in work and inconvenience to patients. The generator available at the hospital is unable to provide power for all facilities on the premises.

The problem was brought to the notice of the Kharar MLA, Mr Bir Devinder Singh, who has been making efforts to ensure the installation of the hotline link.

The hospital authorities had written to the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) for the provision of the hotline facility. They had sought the preparation of the expenditure estimate for the hotline at the earliest. However, the PSEB did not take request seriously because of the failure of the hospital to pay its power bills on a regular basis.

It is learnt that the PSEB wrote back to the hospital seeking an undertaking that, apart from completing various formalities, the latter would pay all charges for the installation of an independent power feeder and clear all outstanding electricity bills for the past year running into lakhs of rupees. Sources said the outstanding bills amounted to about Rs 8 lakh. In the latest letter sent by the Senior Medical Officer (SMO) in charge of the hospital to the PSEB, it was stated that once the expenditure estimates were supplied by the PSEB, these had to be submitted to the higher health authorities for approval. It was only after the approval that the hospital would submit an application for the hotline connection and at that time all formalities as required by the PSEB would be completed.

The SMO further said in his letter that the payment of outstanding bills should not be coupled with the provision of the hotline connection as the bills had to be paid from the government budget allocation. As and when the budget amount was received, the bills were paid without delay. The payment for the hotline facility was to be made by the Punjab Health Systems Corporation. Hence, the estimates should be provided at the earliest to the hospital.
