Consumer court slaps Rs 50,000 fine on Reliance
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, December 9
Even as a tug-of-war between Mr Anil Ambani and Mr Mukesh Ambani for the control of the Rs 90,000-crore Reliance empire continues, there is a trouble for the group on the Chandigarh front.

In a decision that is likely to benefit thousands of Reliance mobile phone subscribers, the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum-II, UT, Chandigarh, has slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 on Reliance Infocomm for violating the contract with subscribers opting for the “Dhirubhai Ambani Pioneer Offer (DAPO)”.

Holding the company guilty of “deficiency in service and unfair trade practices”, the Forum ordered that it should pay an amount of Rs 5,000 each to two complainants — Mr Hardesh Goyal and Mr HPS Ghuman — besides, depositing Rs 40,000 in the Free Legal Aid Fund of the State Legal Services Authority.

The complainants had alleged that they were enrolled under the DAPO on the payment of Rs 3,000 as life membership fee and Rs 600 as monthly charges.

Through an extensive advertisement campaign, they were promised several attractive schemes such as free outgoing calls for 400 minutes, STD calls at local rates and a pulse of 15 seconds for 10 paise.

At the time of enrolment of members, the scheme was reportedly subject to approval by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). However, the company allegedly changed the terms and conditions to the disadvantage of the subscribers after approval from TRAI.

Relying on a judgement of the Supreme Court in the Dr J.J. Merchant vs Srinath Chaturvedi case, the Forum made it clear that it was competent to adjudicate on such a “complicated question of law.”

It ordered that it was fair and reasonable for the complainants to withdraw from the scheme without forfeiting their initial deposit of Rs 3,000 each and any penalty.

‘Veer-Zaara’ leaves Pak guests misty eyed
Jangveer Singh

“Veer-Zaara” left many misty eyed at a local cinema last evening. Many also wept silently. There were, however, moments of cheer also with sportspersons and delegates from Pakistan Punjab, who are here to participate in the Indo-Pak Punjab Games, whistling gustily as only Punjabis can when Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini made their screen appearance.

The movie was not a source of immense interest for the Pak Punjabi guests alone. City residents, specially youngsters, were seen hovering around the theatre because of rumours that “Veer” and “Zaara” — Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta — were making a live appearance on the occasion.

Though this did not materialise, for many of the sportspersons the screening of the movie as well as the Phul theatre was the high point of their visit. The theatre building, which is built in the pre-Independence style and has a quaint mozaic and wood features, was also appreciated, said its Manager Avinash Goel. “The movie symbolises what we have come here to do through sport”, said Ghulam Mohammad. He and others who spoke to Tribune News Service after the film’s screening last night, said they were overwhelmed by the experience.

“I knew about “Veer-Zaara” and had hoped to see it at home”, says Mushtaq adding that seeing it on the cinema screen was however a luxury. Many of the sportspersons compared the screening of the film to their own experience. “The film is the first sincere initiative by Bollywood to create an atmosphere of cordiality between the two countries”, said Mushtaq, adding the Indo-Pak Punjab Games was also a similar initiative.

The sportspersons said they were committed to take the message of love and brotherhood across the border. “The film has only reinforced this and made us emotional”, an athlete said adding that he was overwhelmed by the manner in which the entire team had been made to feel welcome. “Right now we have forgotten whether we are in Lahore or Patiala”, he added.

There was also sombre clapping in the end and many “thank yours” for the local organisers who ensured that the Pak guests did not lack anything during the film’s screening with soft drinks, chips and pop corn being in full supply. TNS

Students indulge in poetry, for the first time in PU’s history
Aditi Tandon

When 14 students from Panjab University and its affiliated colleges joined hands to indulge in poetry this afternoon, one wondered if this “first-of-its-kind experiment” in PU’s history would succeed at all. Here were youthful members of Davitya, the recently formed organisation of 250 students from PU, talking big - of national stakes, of social maladies and of pure verse. The gathering was naturally watching closely for any faux pas on the young poets’ part. That it found none was another matter…

The show began well in time, with 14 poets from English, Mass Communication, Punjabi and Public Administration departments of PU assuming charge of the stage which was to become their platform for creative expression.

Ravi from the Mass Communication Department conducted the tri-lingual poetic symposium at the English auditorium where the audience waited to consume the “unusual fare” of “young poetry”. In the chair of the chief guest was gifted satirist Surendra Sharma who was more than encouraging in his dealings with youngsters.

The inaugural poem of the symposium came from Shivani Chowdhry of the English Department who poured her heart out when demanding equality of genders. She appealed that women fight back with a vengeance lest their freedom becomes a pawn in men’s hands. “Naari bediyon mein jakdi hai, phir bhi voh mahaan hai; purush ke atyachar ko sehen kar, usne banai apne pehchaan hai.” The highly individualistic poet set the tone for the show which went from better to best.

Prashant from the same department added a romantic tinge with “Prem Patra.” He brilliantly balanced his concerns as a poet by first dwelling on contemporary issues and then paying a tribute to mother’s love in “Maa”.

Then came Amita, also from English department whose poem “Nazariya” was a fine representation of her poetic talent.

Apart from conducting the stage successfully, Ravi recited fine poems including “Pichhla Mod”, “Baal se” and “Pehra”. His heartfelt verse “Mujhe yakeen hai tum nahi aaogi; phir bhi muntazir hoon tumhara, is mod par khada, sune mein,” found an instant expression in listeners’ eyes, as did Prabhjot’s poems in Hindi and Punjabi. Laced with satire on political leadership, the poems left a lasting impact, especially on Surendra Sharma.

Next in line came Simranjot Singh, convenor, Literary Wing of Davitya, who recited a hauntingly beautiful poem “Kabristan” with an unusual flair. “Dard taan mere jeen da ahsas hai”, he read, followed by Gurjit Sharma who brought humour back into the show with his poem “Meri Tamanna.”

Tejveer Kaur chose to challenge male chauvinists, declaring “Main tere naal vi poori haan te tere bagair vi poori haan”.

Naveena Singh and Mandeep Kaur recited deeply moving poems “Dil ki daastaan” and “Maa”, respectively, while Gurparsad Raja recited a delightful “Tandav Naach.”

The climax was reserved for the last words from Surendra Sharma who impressed the gathering with a ghazal, a genre he is little identified with. Dramatist Sahib Singh and Dr D.S. Gupt also recited poetry. Dr Gupt’s “Gehri udaas sanjh” and “Twacha ke phootte ankur” left the gathering on the verge of reflections. TNS
