Programme on nutrition education held

Ludhiana, December 8
The local unit of the Food and Nutrition Board, Department of Women and Child Development, organised a five-day training programme in nutrition education today. Fifteen participants, including child development project officer and supervisors from ICDS Department of Punjab attend the programme.

The main objective of this training programme is to update their knowledge in food, nutrition and health promotion activities.

Dr R.K. Sachhar, Professor, DMCH, spoke on hygiene and sanitation (nutrition and infection), nutrition and health care of pregnant and nursing women. Dr Jaswinder Kaur, Associate Professor, Food and Nutrition Department, Home Science College, PAU, delivered a talk on nutrition counselling technique: preparation of area specific educational aids.

An exhibition on Maa ka Pyar and Shishu Aahar was also held on the occasion. The preparation of groundnut burfi, ginger ale and lemon squash was also demonstrated.

Mr Ravinder Kumar and Mr Ranvir Singh, organisers of the event, provided detailed information about food, nutrition and health relevant topics.

Manpreet to lead Punjab woman football team

Manpreet Kaur has been named captain of the sub-junior Punjab football team for participation in the Sub Junior National Women Football Championship to be held at Dindigal (Tamil Nadu) from December 9 to December 24, 2004.

According to Ms Surinder Bhambri, secretary, Punjab Women Football Association, other players of the team are Satwinder Kaur, Pawanpreet Kaur, Sukhvir Kaur, Kashmir Kaur, Sarabjit Kaur, Gurpreet Kaur, Mandeep Kaur, Manpreet Kaur, Amanjot Kaur, Parminder Kaur, Pardeep Kaur, Inderpreet Kaur, Amritpal Kaur, Manpreet Kaur, Maninder Kaur, Navneet Kaur, Ramandeep Kaur, Bhupinder Kaur and Baljit Kaur. Among reserve players would be Paramjit Kaur, Manprer Kaur and Manjit Kaur.

Former national footballer Mandeep Kaur, and Mr Mohinder Singh have been selected as Manager and Coach of the team respectively.

The team was selected under the supervision of Arujana Awardee and Secretary Punjab Football Association Mr Inder Singh after final selection trials held at the football
ground of DAV College, Jalandhar.

The probables were imparted intensive coaching at a 15-day coaching camp to prepare them for the final selection and representation of the state in the nationals.

1.25 lakh cases await Sales Tax assessment

The Sales Tax Department today urged dealers to get their assessments done at the earliest so that the over 1.25 lakh cases pertaining to Sales Tax Assessment that were pending with the department could be cleared.

Mr M.S. Brar, Assistant Excise and Taxation Commissioner, in the first meeting of the Sales Tax Advisory Board that was held here today in Circuit House, said, “There are cases that are even as old as five years. The number of such pending cases has increased to 1.25 lakh in Ludhiana districts I, II and III and it would be in the interest of concerned persons to get their assessments done at the earliest.”

He also said that fact sheets had not been supplied in many cases which should be done soon so that they could be issued VAT numbers and possibilities of any further complications could be avoided.

Advisory committee members said that the committee should meet more often as it was having its first meeting since inception to which Mr Brar assured that the committee would meet every two months.

The members also raised the issue of “mafia that was encouraging Sales Tax Evasion”, which the AETC said was more a matter pertaining to law and order and hence rest with the SSP or the DC.

Among others who attended the meeting were Mr Jaspal Garg, ETO, Mr Parmar, Mr Gurjinder Singh Chawla, Mr Vinod Thapar, Mr Ashok Makkar, Mr Rajeev Johar and Mr Bhupinder Singh Seerat.
