Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, November 30
The Rotary International President, Dr Glenn B. Estess Sr, said today that eradication of polio from the world was a matter of prime concern to the organisation. Dr Estess was talking to mediapersons during a visit to the Rotary Club in Sector 18 here today.

He said since 1985 the Rotary had spent over $ 600 million worldwide and more than $ 55.8 million in India for the eradication of this disease.

Stating that Rotary was set to achieve one of its most ambitious goals in the history of global public health to immunize the children of the world against polio till its 100th anniversary in 2005.

Dr Estess pointed out that remarkable results had been achieved by Rotary in bringing down the number of polio cases in the world. Before the start of this project the number of polio cases across the world were 1,000 a day.

He added that if there was even one case that remains unattended in the country it would get exported to other countries of the world, he added.

Dr Glenn had visited India in 1998 to participate in the national pulse polio immunization day. An international conference was also organised in New Delhi in August.

Health ministers of six Asian countries attended the conference which was addressed by the President of India.

When asked if Rotary’s culture was elitist, Dr Estess replied: “Rotary is not an elitist club. Most of our projects are for the community but since the needs of every community differs from another the clubs have to work differently.

He said Rotary had over 30,000 clubs in 166 countries of the world.”

Dr Glenn commended the Rotary Club of Chandigarh for promoting voluntary blood donation in the region and for setting up Rotary and Blood Bank Society Resource Centre. It was inaugurated yesterday.

Dr Glenn also visited the Rotary’s peace monument at the Sukhna Lake, and later met the students being trained in computers, shorthand, typing, embroidery and tailoring at the Rotary Vocational Training Centre in Sector 18, here.

He would also meet the two children who had been operated upon at the PGI for congenital coronary cardiac disorders.
