US fellowship for DMC Principal

Ludhiana, November 25
Dr Daljit Singh, Principal and Professor of Paediatrics, Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, here has been selected as one of the twelve international educators as fellow for 2004 for the Institute of the Foundation for Advancement International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

FAIMER, a non-profit foundation of the USA, is designed for internal medical school faculty who have the potential to play key roles in improving medical education at their respective institutions. The fellowship includes two residential sessions in the USA and an intersession project at home. Besides, Dr Daljit Singh would also get an active engagement with the institute.

He will be conducting a project on the ‘Utilisation of students’ feedback for curriculum development’ at the DMCH and will be presenting his paper next year in the USA during the second session of the fellowship programme.

Nagar kirtans, contest mark Guru Nanak Dev’s Parkash Utsav

Ludhiana, November 25
Students of Baba Isher Singh (N) Senior Secondary School today celebrated Prakash Utsav of Guru Nanak Dev. They displayed the teachings of Guru Nanak on walls of their classrooms. USPC Jain Public School organised an inter-house shabad gyan contest on the occasion. Vikram Sarabhai House stood first while Aryabhata House, Homi Bhabha House and Ramanujam House stood second, third and fourth, respectively.

Students of BCM School, Basant Avenue, Dugri Road, also celebrated Gurpurb with religious fervour. They sang hymn like ‘mitha bolda sajan jio tuhi tuhi bol paya’ and chanted shabad “jo mange thakur apne se”. The Principal of the school, Dr Vandana Shahi, urged the students to follow the teachings of the Guru.

The Ramgarhia Educational Council, Ludhiana, celebrated Guru Nanak’s birthday with religious fervour and devotion. To commemorate this historic day, the sangat of Ramgarhia Gurdwara Sukh Sagar , students of schools and colleges took out a nagar kirtan. School band played religious tunes and children exhibited skills on Gathka and other martial arts. Love Dale School also took out a nagar kirtan.

Language Dept felicitates Prof Jagraon

Ludhiana, November 25
The Language Department of Punjab organised an interactive session with Punjabi writer and educationist Prof Kulwant Jagraon at Government College for Boys this morning. Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest, Mr S. Darshan Singh, District Public Relations Officer, Ludhiana, said Professor Jagraon had written on all subjects related to masses.

Some of his compositions/poems are capable enough to motivate the oppressed and exploited, he added. Ms Indira Bhatia, Principal of the college, Prof Pirithipal Singh Sohi, member, Language Department’s Advisory Board, Prof Ravinder Bhathal, general secretary, Punjabi Sahit Academy, and Dr Jagtar Dhiman, said the literary work of Professor Jagraon portrays same appeal, modesty and meekness that he himself holds. Professor Jagraon was honoured with a memento and a shawl.

Prof Nachhattar Singh of Government College for Boys presented his paper on the poetry of Prof Kulwant Jagraon.

Western music education comes to town

Ludhiana, November 25
There was no school in city to teach western classical music. Shalini Goenka has started a school to teach piano, guitar , keyboard at Symphony Studios and to teach western music education . Moreover the institute will also provide lessons in speech, drama and communication too.

Shalini told the Ludhiana Tribune “I was interested in learning western classical music from my childhood., but did not find teachers. The school offers learning for various disciplines by following the syllabus provided by Trinity College , London is tailored to specific needs and strengths.

It operates in more than 60 cities . representatives from London travel all over the world, to administer examinations not only in music, but also in speech , drama and communication.

Dowry death case: police remand for 3

Ludhiana, November 25
A city court today remanded three persons, including a woman, in police custody for two days after the Dugri police arrested them on the charges of allegedly killing a woman for dowry.

Sipra, wife of Manu Sidana, was allegedly killed for dowry by her husband and in-laws on November 23 evening. Three of the five accused in the case Kusum Lata (mother-in-law), Manu Sidana, Ashok Kumar (father-in-law) were arrested and produced in the court of a Duty Magistrate today evening. TNS

Encroachments removed

Doraha, November 25
Encroachments on main market road here were removed by the Nagar Council authorities today.
Mr Surjit Singh, Executive Officer, said a number of rehris were impounded and shopkeepers, who had extended their sheds beyond the authorised limit, had been issued a ‘written’ warning.

“Moreover, the rehriwalas and other encroachers, who are coming to get back their goods, are being charged heavy penalty,” he added.

He also said we were planning to find a permanent solution to the menace. With active support and coordination of the police we would remove the rehris and extended sheds permanently.
