Promising archers
Our Sports Reporter

Chandigarh, November 24
Three girls of the Government College for Girls, Sector 11, Chandigarh, Rimpy Gagan and Reena, have made their college proud by winning all-India inter-university archery title.

Though this game is still at its infant stage in the city as hardly any equipment is made available to the archers, they excelled by defeating top ranked players in the country.

Rimpy, who had also attended Indian junior handball camp in the past, said they loved to excel in archery but it was the equipment in which they lagged behind.

They said at present they practised on the Panjab University campus, but without any specialised coach since the UT Sports Department had not provided them with an archery coach despite repeated requests from the Chandigarh Archery Association.

Rimpy said she had also participated in the national archery meet but playing for the state in handball was a unique experience.

All three are determined to revive the glory for their college by winning the inter-college championship and then making efforts to retain the all-India inter-varsity archery title to be held in January, 2005.

Patwari suspended on bribe charge
Tribune News Service

Mohali, November 24
The Ropar administration has suspended a patwari posted at the Kurhri patwar. The patwari allegedly accepted a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a resident of Siau village on November 17 to make entries into the mutation register.

Giving this information, Mr Bir Devinder Singh, MLA, said today that the patwari was suspended following an inquiry initiated by the Deputy Commissioner, Ropar.

The MLA had received a complaint from Gurmeet Singh, a resident of Siau, that he had got registration of his land done four year ago but entries were not being done on the mutation register. The patwari reportedly admitted before the MLA that he had taken the bribe from Gurmeet Singh. The ‘bribe’ money was duly returned to Gurmeet Singh in the evening by the patwari on the insistence of the MLA.

Mr Bir Devinder Singh said he had asked the SDM, Kharar, and the SDM, Mohali, to provide him a list of all such instances where entries to the mutation register were pending following the registration of land sale deals.

“It has been brought to my notice that hundreds of cases are pending in Kharar tehsil and a fewer number are pending in Mohali. We would initiate some action once the status of these pending cases is known.” he said.
