Mohali, November 21
Over 7 per cent of the population in India is suffering from sleep apnea, a disease caused by the lack of oxygen absorption while sleeping. This was stated by Dr Sandeep Mehrishi, pulmonologist and sleep disorder expert. Dr Mehrishi was talking to Chandigarh Tribune during the first International Symposium on lifestyle diseases, organised at Fortis Hospital here on Friday.

Dr Mehrishi said snoring is sleep apnea's only symptom and signified a large number of other related ailments that could lead to hyper-tension, heart attack and even strokes. ‘‘Snoring is not harmful per se but when it is related to sleep apnea it could be a pointer towards serious heart and blood pressure problems. At the same time, sleep apnea itself can lead to these problems. So either way, sleep apnea cannot be ignored.

Dr Mehrishi added that a large number of persons suffer from unrecognised sleep apnea. ‘‘Loud snoring or the kind that leads to gasping and waking up should not be taken lightly at all. Other than health problems, sleep apnea brings down the quality of one's life significantly. The patient is constantly sleepy and drowsy, he said.

Regarding prevention of sleep apnea, Dr Mehrishi said most important was to control weight. ‘‘Lead an active life, don’t drink or smoke. Patients suffering from sleep apnea have to use a CPAP machine, the most effective cure for the problem. The machine has to be used during sleeping. The other cure is to lose weight, he said.

Dr Mehrishi pointed out that snoring among children does not necessarily signify sleep apnea but could be due to enlarged tonsils or adenoids. However, in children sleep apnea needs to be cured since it leads to a lot of mental distress, starts affecting school performance and makes the child irritable and hyperactive.
