YPS students cheer shuttlers
Our Sports Reporter

Chandigarh, October 15
It was a unique experience for over 150 children of Class V of Yadavindra Public School, Mohali, who got the opportunity to watch and cheer players at the semi-final matches in below-13 age group of the ongoing 18th National Sub-Junior Badminton Meet at Sector 42 badminton hall today.

An invitation had been extended by the Chandigarh Badminton Association to a few schools in and around the city.

Ms Gurvinder Rai, one of the senior teachers, and Mr Praveen Singha, sports teacher, who accompanied the children said it was for the first time that schoolchildren had been invited to attend badminton matches.

They thanked the CBA and the school Principal, Mr Harish Dhillon, for providing the opportunity to budding youngsters.

They said earlier invitations used to be extended for cricket or hockey matches only.

Children were rejoiced to watch top-ranked sub-junior players, drawn from all over India, in action.

One of the students said: “We initially thought that we were being taken to a cricket match. After witnessing the badminton matches, I feel I will take to the game.”

Another student wondered why the sport was being neglected by getting poor television coverage. He said he had heard about Prakash Padukone and Gopi Chand — badminton stars of the yesteryear — only in general knowledge books.

Mr T.P.S. Puri, former chief national badminton coach, also interacted with children.

He said the CBA would soon hold a talent hunt to select promising players between nine and 11 years of age.

Later, refreshments were given to the children.

Yesterday, around 60 children of Class V of The Gurukul, Sector 20, Panchkula, had paid a visit to watch the matches.
