Geelani opposes bus service to Pak

Srinagar, October 7
Separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani today opposed the proposed Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus service and softening of the Line of Control.

At a three-hour-long breakfast meeting, the breakway Hurriyat chairman told the visiting 16-member Pakistani media delegation that the proposed bus between the two sides of Jammu and Kashmir would not help ease the situation and “further reinforce the Indian occupation of the state”.

He said the softening of the Line of Control would dilute the Kashmir issue. “We don't want softening of the Line of Control... we want a permanent solution to the problem.”

When the delegation members asked his opinion about any possible solution to the Kashmir issue which could even be independence, Mr Geelani said, “We are in favour of implementing the UN resolutions under which we have only two options — either to merge with India or with Pakistan. There is no third option.”

However, he said if an agreement was reached at the tripartite talks to include the third option (independence) it would be acceptable to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

On the division of the Hurriyat Conference, the hardliner said his group was the ‘’real’’ Hurriyat Conference and there was no other faction.

‘’We expelled those who violated the Hurriyat constitution which clearly states that no leader can contest or participate in the Indian-sponsored elections either in person or through proxy candidates.

“The Hurriyat constitution also clearly mentions that there can be no bilateral dialogue with India. It calls for tripartite talks on the issue involving India, Pakistan and Kashmiris,’’ Mr Geelani said.

When some delegation members pointed out to protests faced by them in the city since their arrival here, he said, “There are apprehensions in the minds of the people about your visit as it has been for the first time since 1947 that Indian and Pakistani authorities have not objected to the visit.”

“India has never allowed any international human rights organisations to visit Jammu and Kashmir so the apprehensions are genuine and it is your duty now to remove these misgivings,” Mr Geelani said.

However, he said, “we have full faith in Pakistan that it will not deviate from its stated position on Kashmir.”

Meanwhile, asserting that the accession of Jammu and Kashmir with India is irrevocable, National Conference president Oma Abdullah said today that his party would not stand in the way if India and Pakistan agreed on any solution to the vexed issue.

“Jammu and Kashmir’s accession with India is irrevocable. We want a solution of the issue within the framework of the Indian Constitution... We are very clear on that,” Mr Abdullah told the visiting 16-member Pakistani media delegation at the luncheon meeting here.

However, he said if India and Pakistan agreed on any other solution that was different from what the NC had suggested and which the people of Jammu and Kashmir on both sides were willing to accept, his party would not stand in the way.

“Unlike the Hurriyat Conference, we will not propose any solution outside the Constitution. We will not come in the way of any solution if it emerges outside the Constitution.” — UNI

Visits will ‘enrich debate’ on J&K
Tribune News Service

Srinagar, October 7
Mr Imtiaz Alam, leader of the visiting Pak journalists’ delegation, said here yesterday that the visit was aimed at facilitating similar exchanges across the countries of the sub-continent as envisaged by the South-Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA).

This was corroborated by Mr Dilip Padgaonkar, vice-president of SAFMA, saying that the trip could not be possible “without a political decision”. Mr Imtiaz Alam, secretary general of the Pakistan chapter of SAFMA, accompanied by his colleagues and their Indian counterparts were interacting with local mediapersons here yesterday.

Mr Padgaonkar held that despite all constraints, the beginning would “enrich a decision on Kashmir and improve Indo-Pak relations.” He pointed out that the objective of the SAFMA was to “enrich debate” on different issues, thereby leading to resolution of problems.

Reacting to questions raised by their counterparts here, Mr Imtiaz Alam, said the delegation had nearly 20 meetings with representatives of a cross-section of people in the state.

The Pak journalists interacted with students of the university of Kashmir.

The “limited audience” at the university caused resentment among students at the campus, who held protests outside the venue.

The team met separatist leader Shabir Ahmad Shah and mainstream parties and human rights groups. Some team members paid a visit to Gulmarg.

The visiting team was received after their daylong travel from Jammu by the journalists at Royal Springs Golf Course here. A warm welcome was accorded to them on their arrival.

Bollywood shies away from Kashmir
Tribune News Service

Jammu, October 7
Because of fear of terrorism Bollywood has virtually rejected the invitation of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to return to Kashmir for shooting, but has adopted neighbouring Himachal Pradesh where several places resemble those in the valley.

It is almost over a year that Mufti Sayeed had flown all the way to Mumbai to invite top moviemakers to Kashmir. However, the response has been poor as no big budget movie producer obliged him.

A couple of movies have been shot in the tribal area of Ladakh where several fresh locations have been discovered. Most of the movies with stories revolving around terrorism are being shot in the Kullu and Manali areas in Himachal.

The PDP chief, Ms Mehbooba Mufti, accompanied her father to Mumbai where they hosted a dinner for top film producers, directors and actors in a bid to re-introduce the locations with which the celluloid world had an emotional relation in the past. There was a time when almost each and every movie had a couple of shots around the scenic Dal Lake, Gulmarg and Pahalgam.

In a recent informal chat versatile actor Anupam Kher had stated that it was not possible to shoot films under the shadow of gun in the valley. He said an actor would not be able to bring the desired expressions under these circumstances.

Several movies, including Roza and Diljale, that depicted scenes of militancy, were shot in Himachal.

The dinner meeting of the Mufti had turned sour when some argument reportedly took place between Kher and Ms Mufti about the situation in the valley.

Thereafter, virtually no headway has been made in this direction as the sense of confidence has yet to be restored among the movie world.

Congress responsible for terrorism: Gupta
Tribune News Service

Jammu, October 7
Accusing the Congress for being responsible for emergence of secessionism, fundamentalism and terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir and North-East, former Union minister and senior BJP leader, Prof Chaman Lal Gupta, has said unity and integrity of the country can be saved only by inculcating the spirit of patriotism.

Addressing election meetings in the Akhnoor Assembly constituency, Professor Gupta said the root cause of problems in Jammu and Kashmir was that Congress leadership, first of all created uncalled for hurdles in the accession of this state to the Indian Union and then pampered Sheikh Abdullah to an extent that the Maharaja Hari Singh, who had signed the instrument of accession by being sole authority to do so, was put in-exile.
