Freshers party organised

Ludhiana, September 28
It was fun and frolic at Gujranwala Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology (GGNIMT) as the BBA, BCA, MBA and MCA students gave a warm welcome party to the freshers.

A medley group dance presented by Nikhil Riana, Gaurav Bhatia, Prashant Bhardwaj and Ankush won accolades from the audience. A humorous skit, ‘Papa Kehtein Hain’, staged by BCA III students evoked a lot of laughter. Another group dance presented by MBA and MCA girls enthralled the audience. Sarabjot Kaur of MBA III sang a beautiful Punjabi song.

The main attraction was Mr Fresher and Ms Fresher contests. The contest was narrowed down to three rounds: cat walk, common question and judges’ questions round. The judges, Ms Jasdeep Kaur Sandhu, who was Ms Talented Punjab 2002, and Ms Amrinder Kaur Toor, who is a leading coach for folk dances, declared Ms Pooja form BCA I and Mr Amanpreet Gogia from BBA I as Ms Fresher and Mr Fresher from undergraduate section while Ms Divya form MBA I and Mr Aman Manocha from MBA I were declared winners from the post-graduate section.

NSS camp

A 10-day NSS camp has been underway at Kamla Lohtia Sanatan Dharam College under the guidance of programming officers, Prof Yograj Angrish and Prof Deepak Dhingra. A lecture on environment was delivered by Prof Neelam Khullar and Prof Shashi Kapoor spoke on ‘Importance of NSS’.

Workshop at GNIMIT

A lecture-cum-workshop on ‘Excellence in leadership’ was organised at Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology, Gujarkhan Campus, Model Town, Ludhiana, on September 28 under the aegis of ISTE Students’ Chapter.

Police remand for Babla’s accomplice

Jeet Singh, alias Jeeta, militant Babla’s accomplice who was arrested from the Akhara canal bridge in the early hours yesterday and from whom a countrymade pistol along with two cartridges and 200 gm of opium were recovered at Jagraon was produced before Ms Jitinder Walia, subdivisional judicial magistrate, here today who allowed judicial custody of the accused under the Arms act till October 12, sent him in police custody till September 30 in the narcotic case.

De-addiction centre inspected

Ludhiana, September 28
The drug de-addiction centre at Dr Kotnis Acupuncture Hospital, Salem Tabri, was today inspected today by the District Social Security Officer (DSSO), Mr Karam Singh. During his interaction with patients, he said now the patients coming for detoxification would be allowed to remain in the centre for one month, according to the government’s latest policy.

Mr Karam Singh praised the working of the hospital in the field of drug de-addiction. Dr Rajinder Singh, Project Director, said the government should provide free food to the patients admitted to the centre for detoxification.

Mr Ranjit Aujla, Punjabi singer from Hong Kong, sang his latest songs from his new CD: ‘Nashe diye botaley’ and ‘Vadiya sharabiya ve’ and said that his CD was dedicated to the patients who had come for detoxification. He entertained the patients with these songs.

Dr Inderjit Singh Medical Superintendent said the use of smack was increasing fast in the rural Punjab.

He said people should be made aware about this addiction. Dr K.S. Bhalla, Dr Sunil Lakhotra and Ms Kanwal Walia were also present.

Volleyball meet concludes

Mandi Gobindgarh, September 28
The CBSE Cluster XVI Volleyball Tournament concluded here today at the Gobindgarh Public school grounds. It was the culmination of three days of intense competition by 29 teams comprising boys and girls in the under 19 age group from all over Punjab. Mr Rajan Gupta, IG, Jalandhar, was the Chief guest on the occasion.

More than 400 students from all over the state participated in this meet. Girls of NSPS, Ludhiana, defeated GPS, Mandi Gobindgarh, in the final while APS, Jalandhar, got third position.

Among boys, the title was bagged by M.R.S. Police Public School, Phillaur and the team of Apeejay School, Jalandhar, was runner-up. D.A.V. Public School, Ludhiana, got third position.

Football trials on October 2

Ludhiana, September 28
Trials to select the Ludhiana boys’ football team (u-16) will be conducted by the District Football Association here at the Guru Nanak Stadium on October 2 at 9 am.

According to Mr Tara Singh Lotey, honorary secretary of the association, players born on or after January 1, 1989, are eligible for the trials. Interested boys have been advised to bring with them their age-proof certificates along with three passport size photographs. They have been asked to report to Mr Amritpal Singh Mavi, senior football coach, Ludhiana.

The selected players will represent Ludhiana in the Punjab State Junior Football Championship scheduled to be held at Kurali (Ropar) from October 7 to 10, Mr Lotey said.
