Chandigarh, September 28
Brilliant performance by Sandeep Bhattachariya (51 in 49 balls) and Shivam Pathania (42) enabled Chandigarh Cricket Association XI to beat Panchkula District Association XI by 34 runs in the Haryana Inter-District Cricket Tournament for u-15 being played at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, here today.

CCA XI skipper Sandeep won the toss and elected to bat first. The team scored 153 runs for the loss of eight wickets in the stipulated 35 overs.

In reply, Panchkula XI scored 76 in the first 15 overs. Leg spinner Vikrant Bansal captured four wickets giving just nine runs. Amit Kumar (23) and Vipul Chadha (16) were the highest scorers.

Brief scores: Chandigarh Cricket Association XI: 153 for 8 in 35 overs: (Shivam Pathania 42, Sandeep Bhattachariya 51, Sikander Gill 14, Puneet Dhiman 2 for 14, Yashvardhan 2 for 10).

Panchkula District Association XI: 119 all out (Amit Kumar 23, Vipul Chadha 16, Karan Chillana 11 not out, Vikrant Bansal 4 for 9, Geetanshu Trehan 2 for 21, Sandeep Bhattachariya 2 for 8).

Swimming meet

Harmail Singh, Mukesh Kumar and Ram Kiran will represent Chandigarh in the Fifth National Swimming Championship for the physically challenged to be held in Mumbai from October 1 to 4. Anil Kumar will be the coach of the team.

Handball championship

The results of the North-East Zone Inter-University Handball Championship being played on league basis at Panjab University grounds: men: Panjab University beat Punjabi University, Patiala, 21-6; and Chaudhary Devi Lal University, Sirsa, beat Delhi University, Delhi, 31-26.

Women: Panjab University beat Pt Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur, 23-20; and Delhi University beat Mahrishi Dayanand University, Rohtak, 32-27.

Athletics meet

The CBSE Cluster XIII Athletics Meet, conducted by PML SD Public School, Sector 32, Chandigarh, held at Sports Complex, Sector 46, entered fourth day.

Table tennis tourney

Manav Mangal High School, Sector 21, beat Sacred Heart 3-0 in the quarterfinal of the u-14 girls Chandigarh table tennis tournament.

In another quarterfinal, St Joseph’s, Sector 44, got a walkover from AKSIPS, Sector 41. Tomorrow in the semifinal, Manav Mangal play Bhavan Vidyalaya and DAVPS, Sector 8, will face St Joseph’s, Sector 41.

In the u-17 girls semifinal, Manav Mangal High School, Sector 21, beat Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 27, 3-0.

In the other semifinal, DAVPS, Sector 8, beat Sacred Heart 3-0.

Tomorrow, Manav Mangal, Sector 21, will clash with DAVPS, Sector 8, for the title.

In the u-19 girls semifinal, Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 27, beat AKSIPS, Sector 41, 3-2.

In the second semifinal, Dev Samaj, Sector 21, lost to Sacred Heart 2-3. Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 27, will face Dev Samaj, Sector 21, in the final.

Sports festival

MOHALI: YPS, Mohali, secured the first position in basketball and football matches in the boys’ category on the final day of silver jubilee sports festival held at the school. The prizes were given away by Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority Chief Administrator A.S. Chatwal.

The results in order of merit are: Basketball (boys) — Mohali, YPS, Rai MNSS, Gwalior’s Scindia School for Boys. Football (boys) — Mohali, YPS, Gwalior’s Scindia School for Boys and Chandigarh’s Guru Nanak Public School. Basketball (girls) — Ajmer’s Mayo College, Mohali’s YPS, Gwalior’s Scindia Kanya Vidhalaya.

The results of today’s matches are: Football boys — match between Gwalior’s Scindia School for Boys and Chandigarh’s New Public School ended in a draw. Both teams scored two goals each. Another match between YPS and Chandigarh’s Guru Nanak School ended in a draw with both schools scoring two goals each.

Basketball boys: In the first semi-final, YPS, Mohali, defeated Scindia School for Boys 58-38. In the second semifinal, MNSS Rai defeated Chandigarh’s St Xavier’s 57-16. In the finals, Mohali YPS defeated Rai MNSS by 69-61.

Basketball (girls) — Ajmer’s Mayo College defeated Chandigarh’s St Kabir Public School by 42-6. YPS defeated Chandigarh’s Guru Nanak Public School 32-10. Chandigarh’s St Xavier defeated St Kabir Public School by 20-4. Mayo College defeated Gwalior’s Scindia Kanya Vidhalaya by 49-34.

One sub-inspector and three head constables of the Police Control Room were today promoted as assistant sub-inspectors and Inspector, respectively.

SI Rajinder Singh Dhani was today promoted as an inspector, while HC Kaka Singh, Harinder Singh and Rajinder Singh were made ASIs.
